Suggestions for camping near Ouray CO

So the lady and I are heading to Ouray in late August and are looking for a place to camp. I know about the KOA but we're looking for something a little less commercial and more natural. We'll be tenting it for 8 nights so she definitely needs flush toilets and hot showers.

The KOA will be our fallback but any suggestions are welcome! Thanks!

Check out Ridgeway State Park which is about 15 miles north of Ouray. It is exactly what you are looking for. Make your reservations now; it is very popular.

We made a trip up there just last month and I could pass you a few suggestions:

1. Ampitheater campground, which you'll find south on Hwy. 550 just south of town. We didn't camp there, but heard it was nice. It's a developed campground so it will have all the amenities you're looking for, but expect a crowded atmosphere. May want to check online and see if you can book this one in advance.

2. If you head south, @ Co. Rd. 20 (turnoff to Corkscrew Gulch) there is a primitive campground w/some nice spots. No toilets, no showers, and expect lots of traffic.

3. If you keep heading south toward Silverton, you'll find more primitive camping near bottom of Ophir Pass and again @ Mineral Creek.

4. I would second Ridgeway State Park. That place has everything, and if you're into fishing the Uncompahgre has some nice trout.

5. If you decide to stay in Ouray I'd recommend the River's Edge Motel (Ouray CO Motels and Lodging: River's Edge Motel Dog Friendly Lodging and Motel). They're pet friendly, the owner/proprieter is at your beck and call, and the rooms are very nice for the price.

If ya gotta have the amenities, I also say check out Ridgeway. It's very nice....but the part that I've stayed at was pretty open (not a lot of big trees) so it doesn't have the same feel as some more remote campgrounds.
