suggestions: heat for winter car camping?

Wife and I have surplus (We got them for free, brand new, for volunteering at a homeless vet event) G.I. minus 30, 4 piece sleeping bags and an Air Bedz air mattress for the 4Runner.

Diesel Heater

Expensive but only thing we have found that is safe and actually works. We use one of these with our RTT. Do not buy one of the cheap China ones off Amazon. You will instantly regret it. (Smells like Toxic fumes and unreliable)

Portable Diesel Heater: Diesel and Petrol , DC12V to AC240V -VVKB

We have found it will run for about 14 to 15 hours on a single tank(approx 1 gal) of diesel at the low setting. At the high settings it gets too hot and will burn you out of the tent. It is also a dry heat being a Heat Exchanger.

A good multilayer sleeping bag system is all you need. The ones I used were three layers with the outer layer being a gortex shell. I have gone through cold weather training in Alaska and slept on the ground with only a sleeping bag in -20F and I was very warm with sleeping bag setup. Trick is to get undressed inside the bag and keep your next mornings clothes inside the bag with you. Then you get dressed inside the bag in the morning. My boots were another story though having sat overnight in the cold.

When I was in the infantry, I used to get buck naked inside my bag and just put my uniform (minus boots of course) in the foot of my bag. Not really ideal if you have to get up and go unexpectedly. :sniper:

Because of that, my OG poncho liner is my go-to camping blanket. Camping, staying at someone's house, sleeping in the 4runner, etc. Hell, I even use it in the house during winter, if it gets down around 20 or lower. I even bought 2 more a couple of years ago because it is starting to show it's age (31 years that I've owned it!).
