Sun Roof Problem

Bought my 04 runner, which I like, but the sunroof doesn't work. I was told that it is a "pricey" fix. Anyone else have this problem or now a quick fix?

Either accept your 4runner has a permanent glass roof, or give us some more info, did you check fuses? Make sure all parts are present, is the motor making any noise? Maybe check your VIN and confirm it is a factory sunroof.

Yes it's a factory sunroof. checked all relays and no problems with them. No sound from the moter or movement of anykind when pressing the open/close button. I was told that the whole thing needed replaced with the cost of $2000 plus. SERIOUSLY???

Do the map lights work in the overhead console?

You could pop off the overhead console to verify the motor is actually getting power from the ope/close switch. To do this, pull down on the edge of the console closest to the windshield. If you give it a little bit of force it will pop and hinge downwards for removal. The clips holding it in are metal, don't be afraid to give it a little muscle.

You'll have to trace some wiring, and do some research on which wires are for what, but definitely better than $2k.

Try what SoneRick suggested, you need to qualify the switch and make sure that it isn't the issue, if the switch is working properly you want to head to the motor side and see if its getting power.

I tried to open it when it was frozen. after that, I can hear some noise when i try to open it. but it works fine when i tilt it up. when i try to close it. it just goes pass the closing position and try to slide open, and will start making that noise again, and it will go back and try to tilt up again. I have to manually close it little by little. the noise sounds like some gear's tooth are broken, service guy say it's gonna be a expensive fix.

I had an 04 Sport Edition with the same issue. Very pricey and it turns out that the sun roof motor needed to be replaced. They have to take everything off the roof inside and out, that's what makes it so expensive. That's what they told me anyway. Luckily for me it was covered under warranty the first time it happened.. Next time it happened I couldn't open the sun roof yet again and just left it that way. They wanted to charge me $700 just to take a look at it.

Well at least the back window comes down..... lol I'll try the switch, but after that, it's a moon roof.
