Sunroof question

I have a 2005 SR5 V8. Noticed today going down the interstate at 70 with the sunroof open, every now and then I could hear sound as if it was adjusting or something. I have never noticed this before and use it fairly often, although 99% of the time I am running around town at 45, not 70.. It works fine, just curious what the noise was. My 14 year old son could also hear it, although we never saw it move. I do not have any issues with the truck I am aware of. What could cause the sunroof to sound like it is engaging to close, or open? Thanks.

It's fine. It auto adjusts the wind deflector based on speed.

This EXACT thing happened to me on the way back from a trip to the woods today. I went through some pretty dusty roads with the sunroof open and I thought some dust must have got in there and messed with the motor or something. Thought I'd come here for a few answers and BAM, here it is, right on pg. 1. LOVE this site.

The deflector raises to full height when speeds drop below 45mph. I never really pay attention to when drops down, but I want to say it's around 55mph.

The factory wind deflector sucks, I couldn't even have the sunroof open when I first bought mine. The wind noise sounded and felt like a helicopter landing on my head.

I installed a weathertech deflector, now I can go down the freeway and don't even need to turn the radio up. It made a big difference, and well worth the money for it.

Try opening up your rear hatch window.

The problem with opening up a moonroof without compensating elsewhere with another opened window is that the airflow creates a vortex and negative pressure in the cabin.

I sat in the rear seat of a convertible M3 once and the vortex that was created was sucking the air out of my lungs.

I always crack the rear passenger window when I have the sunroof open. This prevents the noise and adds better airflow. The catch is I have to remember to close the window when I close the sunroof.

I don't think there would be an issue if it rained.

My biggest concerned about closing doors with windows open is the hard rattle on the glass as the door is slammed shut.

eh, the weathertech solved everything and you can have it all the way open and barely even mess up your hair. Plus it looks nice on there too.

Yeah, you don't want to mess up your hair while driving around a T4R.

Yes, we must maintain a pristine and well-groomed image. After all, it isn't Jeeps we are driving. Those guys can get away with stubble and nappy hair...nobody would care.

Chris is correct. It automatically adjusts based on wind speed. Its a nice feature.

As long as the rear window is closed and the recirc button isn't pushed it actually nice for me. I usually put the AC on with the sunroof open. I also put some low noise tires on.

No probs here. I always have mine open with my windows closed ( especially on the freeway).

Paid closer attention to the deflector today, it raises when speeds drop going below about 45mph and goes down slight above 58-60mph.

I can leave my moonroof open (not tilted) and still hear the radio just fine at 70mph, all the other windows are closed. The wind noise isn't terrible, there is some but I still can have a conversation without shouting.

Even with the automatic adjustment, I find that I usually have to close the sunroof about 2 inches from full open to reduce some of the noise and buffeting when I'm running over about 60 MPH and all the windows are up. It was the same on my 2nd and 3rd gens.

Also helps keep dog hair from coming back to the front of the cabin :

One bad thing about having the moonroof open and the rear window open is that sulfur smell will come into the cabin when you hard accelerate.
