Swapping 4th gen front diff into 3rd gen

Hello,

Title says it all.

I have got 3rd gen 3.0 Turbo diesel (read v6) and have a spare 4th gen front diff with 4.56 gears.
my current setup is 4.1 and as I am planning to upgrade to 33 mt tyres I am looking to regear to 4.56 which would perfectly fit my manual tranny and needs.On top of that, 4th gen front diff is beefier with 8 inch reverse gearing.

I have serached the web and found out the 4th gen diff has 30 splines versus 27 on mine,so that means I will have to change CVs as well.

questions unanswered so far are:
1. will CVs from 4th gen fit straight to my car? is there any difference in length and outer spline number?
2. will there be enough space to fit the diff in front? some say body lift is necessary, is 1 inch enough?
3.will there be any modifications neccessary for diff actuator as the diff is from 120 prado (read 4.7 4runner) which is full time not part time as my runner
4. are there any other issues I should consider before the build?

has any one of you done that before?

yes that is an option as well, I just thought moving to 8 icnh would benefit the truck and as I already have one, if CVs fit straight on from 4th gen it would be less fuss than selling this diff and than buying new set of gears

Check over on YotaTech & Pirate 4x4. With the bigger diff the geometry's gonna be off. Our spindle's are different, you'd probably have to modify the oil pan. If it was doable, I'm sure plenty of people would have done it already. It's a great idea to have the 8" up front though.

Yes it's been done. Front range offroad has it done on their blue third gen 4runner. Call them up and see if they will sell u the parts to convert it. When I wheeled with them they hadn't quite perfected the swap, the chromoly CV axles were a little noisy. But if your OK with that then see if they will sell u the stuff. It's. Considerable upgrade and makes the front much much stronger.
 
When I saw their 4runner, they were also running their own longer control arms. They were running 37s in moab. They were not hammering it, but they weren't easy on it either, it worked great. If your running 35s or bigger, it really should be a seriously considered mod. I imagine the chromoly cv axles aren't cheap though.

Front range off road, they haven't released their LCA, or UCA. The chromoly cv axles I believe are almost $500 EACH ! Anyways, I don't think they have realeases any parts that are on that blue 3rd gen. The one that has a beast IFS.
 
Did u call them and ask? While they may not mass produce the parts, I'm sure they will make them if u got money. 500 isn't bad really compared to constantly breaking and replacing stock axles, some factory Toyota CV axles are like 900 bucks. I think the chromoly CVS are made by rcv. They usually have a great warranty.

I guess your right. $500 isn't bad. But that's $1000 just for cv.

I have emailed them and asked about their front set up. And was told it is not available for public. But possibly will be. That was like right when they showed it.

I just wished a company would already make a uniball LCA, few other beefy parts. Everything that's out there.... is long travel. Which is TC $$$
