I'll Second that opinion, have had my SilverStars on my ride almost a year and primarily drive at night and mostly for work.

Love these, pricier than stock replacements but worth it, much more brighter AND WHITER light! Shop around for the best deals though, you can pick em up online much cheaper at certain sites.

I'd just buy backups just in case and leave em in the stoarge area with the tire jack.
 
The ULTRA is a newer & better version of the existing silverstars. My silverstars (1 bulb) burned out a few months ago after 1.5 years of usage. I took out the 2nd bulb and examined the filament. It looked like its about to burn out also. I'm not sure how much better the ULTRA silverstars are. They're supposed to be brighter and longer lasting. I like the silverstars, but they sure don't last long at all. I'm not gonna bother replacing them as I have put the O.E. bulbs back in. I'll eventually install some HIDs. Just my 2 cents
 
Mine just blew after a year and a half. That seems to be the longevity of these bulbs. Hopefully the new Ultras they spent a little more R&D time to make them last longer. I ended up putting my OEs back in due to lack of time for a Wally World run for new bulbs. BTW Wally World 2 pack is $34.00
 
They are supposed to last 30% longer than the regular Silverstars--PLUS there is a $10 mail in rebate if bought before 1/31/07
 
If you have DRLs then I avoid them since they'll burn out much quicker than if you have control over them being on. I've got two years on mine and I'll let you knwo when they go.
 
I got two years out of mine on my daily driver. The easiest way to increase the bulb life is turn on the lights after the engine is started and turn them off before shutting off the engine. When the engine is running the voltage is somewhere around 13.8 vs 12 when it's off. The surge in voltage will shorten bulb life. My friends all couldn't get more than a year out of their Silverstars.
 
In addition to the Pep Boys rebate there is also a Sylvania rebate available too! $5 on pair of SilverStars and $10 on the Ultras. Only the Sylvania needs the UPCs.
 
I had the original Silverstars in my 4Runner, they lasted about 1 year. Which really makes me mad, because I really don't drive much at night.

So most of that year, they weren't even on!

I'm done with all these different halogen bulbs that come out.

One of my next projects is to convert to a projector lens, and go HID, and stop playing around with bulbs that burn out every 6months to a year.

i tried both. gotta love the return policy! i put one SS in the drivers side and a NH in the pass. the NH were brighter and have been in there for 1.5 yrs and i drive with the headlights on always. havent faded yet! everyone seems to say the SS last about a year so i will not buy them!

try it like that, see which you like and return the others
 
My mom has the NHs in her '99 Limited and compared to my SS they are pretty much the same compared side by side but the NH should last longer with DRLs. Now coupled with the Silverstar H3s as fogs they cast much more light then the OEM H3s do and by quite a bit. With the fogs on with the headlights I have more light than my mom's with just the NH and OEM fogs.
 
I paid $20 a pair for the SS at Pep Boys - put in for their $5 pair rebate plus the manf $5 pair rebate -- so I paid like $5 per bulb. If they last a year that's not bad.
 
Get back on track here....

Hopefully we will see opinions posted of the Silverstar ULTRA vs. the regular Silverstars. We all know the benefits and drawbacks of the original SS. But these new Ultras are "supposed" be be whiter and wider than the older Silverstars and that is what I (and probably darktiger) would like to find out before buying them too.
 
I'll probably give the new version a try since I've been happy with the original and I'm over two years on my set. I also have the H3 fogs and they are a big improvement over the weak stock ones.

I just purchased a pair of silver star ultras for my 2003 4Runner. I used to have the regular silver stars as my main driving lights (night), but now I moved it to the fogs. The main driving lights (night) now have silver star ultras and they are definally whiter, brighter, and awesome :) I will take pics of both on to compare them for you all
