The K&N filters are supposedly one of the most bullet-proof designs on the market. I know this doesn't mean much, but it makes me feel good knowing it's there. Because I do the changes myself, I am probably still paying less for the change than I would at the stealer.

There is a very well-respected member of BITOG who makes his living analyzing and formulating motor oil, and I have seen him remark that the K&N filter's combination of flow characteristics, build-quality and filtration capacity make it one of the absolute best filters available.

Filters that flow better at the expense of better filtration (within reason) may be better than filters that filter better at the expense of flow rates. Or, I could be full of $hit, which is probably the most likely scenario here.

I have cut open a few filters after use on my 4runner (looking for what I don't know) but I must say the stock Denso/Yota-D3 is made quite well and has a nice paper filter pack and I must say I get no bad start up noise in sub zero temps.

The Pure-One I have used for many years on other cars and trucks with great results. I am a little worried to run them in the real cold for fear of slow oil flow at start up (filter pack is real tight) but I must say I don't know what the flow rate is so I may be worried for nothing.

The K&N is built like a tank and I run one when I tow my camper in the summer cuz I want that high flow rate under high RPM and the can is real thick so there is no fear of it crushing under load.

I stay away from Fram .......... I just always get start up noise so I avoid them.

For me I try to stick with the stock Denso/Yota D-3 for oil changes up to 5,500mi and the Pure-One for over that like up to 7,500 mi.

Hi Guys,

Do you follow Toyota's recommendation in the service manual during change oil maintainance? I just noticed that every 15,000 miles, i'm spending a lot for change oil. i asked one of my friend who has Toyota Seq. and they are not spending more done $100 every maintainance. The last time they charge me was $918.00 ( change of spark plug, oil change, tune up, change differential oil, tire rotation, etc... )

Need to know your output as my 40k miles is about to come and send my runner for maintainance again.

IMO id just stick with OEM, there is nothing bad about using a oil filter that was designed to be used for your car. Especially if its something you throw away in a short span of time anyways. I run factory oil filters on all my cars.

Hi Guys, I'm new here. Just bought a 99 v6 sr5 sport. It has 72000 miles, and I'd like to change over to Mobil 1, which is what I use in my wife's car. I can get it cheap from Sams, and we can both now use the same oil.

My new 4Runner has not ever had synthetic, and I live in Texas where the weather goes to opposite extremes in the same week. Question is, is it ok to change to synthetic at this mileage, and would you guys use 5W30 (as recommended by Toyota) or 10W30?

Also, should I just buy Toyota filters, or something from Auto Zone?

There should be no problem in switching to mobil 1 I would go with what the manual says as far as the oil weight.

As far as the filter goes I would stick with the Toyota/Denso stock filter and buy them on line for the best deal or you could get a Wix or Napa Gold "same thing" on line at Fleet Filter I think it's Fleetfilter.com or just Google Fleet Filter. The Wix/Napa Gold is a great filter for the 4runner.

What kind of wax do you guys recommend for a black car. I like it nice and shiny.

I wanted to piggy back on this question and ask a couple of opinions. I talked with my mechanic yesterday about switching over to Mobil 1. I have a 99 Limited 4WD with about 140k miles. What are the advantages for me in making this switch and will, or, are there typically any positive and/or negative effects I can expect by making this switch to synthetic at 140k miles?

so i just bought a 1996 SR5 4x4 4Runner with 183,000 miles on it...

Would it harm (or benefit) the motor if i switch to mobil1 synthetic oil?

Toyota "genuine" Oil is actually nothing more then a rebottled Pennzoil conventional oil....you know the kinds you find at Autozone for like $2

If you are going to use conventional oil, Havoline is one of my fav as far as conventional goes....otherwise i run Motul lubricants.

Toyota motor oil (5W-30) is produced by Esso Patroleum Canada / Imperial Oil.

I have a 96 SR5 Auto, using Pennzoil dino in the summer and Pennzoil Plantinum in the winter. Oic is every 6 months regardless of the miles.

Thai -- Agree with your assessment. Been driving with syn in my full-size trucks forever with good results.

Question regarding overall maintenance -- Do you recommend a Toyota dealer for service or a shop specializing in 4Runners / Toyota vehicles?
