Also, are those 285's or 255/85/16's? They look a little skinny, but maybe it's my monitor.

They do look skinny for being a 285... Are they KM2s? Those MTs run small

Yes, they're KM2s. They say 285 right on the side of the tire. KM2s definitely run small, but they're far and above my favorite tire for the terrain we have here in Utah. Plus they're super light, which is great for a DD.

thanks for all the help everyone. After a lot of reading, here's what I'm finding:


Add diffs are 1" wider. (something about the vacuum, half-shaft, etc)

You can run manual hubs with ADD

I have no problem running ADD or Auto hubs, except for the fact that my 4.88s are installed in the taco diff, which is not ADD.

That leaves me with two options:

1) convert the 4runner to manual hubs and ditch the ADD (it's a pain to swap out the ABS rings, more downtime, I'll have to buy new wheel bearings)

2) re-gear the 4runner diff and keep the ADD and forget about using the Taco parts. (~$500)

Looking all over - trying to confirm for sure if a 1st gen Tacoma CV axles will be okay for my '98 4Runner.

Are they the same? Is one stronger or weaker than the other? Or should I just get an OEM CV for a 4R?

Part number in question: 4343004020 - I have an opportunity to buy two used CV axles from a Taco, and they are Toyota and original with about 111k miles on them.

Two types of axles right - ADD and manual, correct? How would I be able to tell the difference? Most trucks don't have manual hubs, is my impression. Thanks!

So glad I found this thread, was going to buy a whole 99runner for parts for my tacoma. I need some help, sounds like i can't retrofit an e locker from a 99 4 runner into my 95 tacoma rear diff housing or am I wrong.
Can this be done?

Ok.

Everything, suspension wise, will swap on from the Taco to the 4Runner, except for the NON-TRD rear axles. You have a TRD, which has the e-locker, so it's an 8" diff, same as the 4Runner, so you're good there.

When I did my 4Runner, I found a guy on TTORA who sold me 4.88 with ARB lockers. Put the front diff into the 4Runner, and she went right in. Haven't had any problems since I hooked her up.

The manual transfer case even bolts to the back of the 4Runner trans, as long as you have the same motor.

I'm currently running the manual hub swap, becasue I like it more. With the ADD, there is too much electrical stuff under the truck. I feel more comfortable with the manual hubs and transfer case, because it's all mechanical.

Not to mention, If you snap an ADD shaft on the trail, you better have a replacement. With the manual hubs, you can just cover the holes in the diff and hub and keep driving.

The 4Runner is awesome. You'll be amazed what she'll do for you once you get her built.

Are the differential mounts the same for the front. Same as the tacoma mounts. The 2 arms that mount the diff?
I'm looking to buy some for my taco and see way more 4runner parts avaialble.

I just got into the toyota game and i bought a 97 4runner and wanted to know if there are any modifications i would have to do to her in order to fit the 99 front bumper... Please if anyone can help so i don't buy things for no reason

Has anyone found any other model year Tacoma/Tundra parts working with the 3rd Gen 4Runner?

For some reason there are a lot of newer Tacoma parts available in my area from 2005-2015.

Reviving this thread to ask, will the manual tranny from a tacoma fit in a 3d gen 4Runner? The 4Runner trannys are hard to find, and expensive.

1st gen tacoma manual transmission will work with 3rd gen 4runner's as long as the engine was the same for both vehicles.
