Because the 3rd gens have had nothing but issues since they came out. Transmission issues, shifting issues, rear diff issues, etc. I'm not surprised they came in last right now. Toyota has a lot to address with the 3rd gens.

I can't say that I've heard much good things about the new ones. I'm also not fond of the look they went with.

It's all relative, a "compact sedan" these days is as big as a full-sized was in the 90's. All the "Compact Trucks" are about the size of most "half-tons" back in the 90's. The full-sized got even bigger.

Normally I'd say that Consumer Reports is just a shill rag with no real sensibilities on how to review a product properly, but even a broken clock is right twice.

I'm able to give some insight into this. I bought a 16' Tacoma in October 2015. Double cab, SR5, 2wd. The thing was plagued with driveline issues. Multiple transmission problems (4). Then the rear end developed a nice tendency to decide sometimes for the truck to not go anywhere at all.

The 3.5 belongs in a Camry, not a truck. I had nothing but issues with it. I really wanted to love the truck and am a lifelong Toyota fan.

My Dad drives a 16' Tundra 4x4, his significant other a RAV4, its a Yoda family. Trading it in for the 16' 4Runner 4x4 was the best move I ever made. It has been flawless. I took it on a 5k mile road trip a few days after buying it.

I believe every bad thing said about gen3 tacos. Unfortunately.

I bought my 2016 4Runner because I was afraid the 17 would get the crap 3.5 if they re-styled them. I will think they should offer the Tacoma with a v8. Not sure why they put one in the 4runner but never the Tacoma.

It's Atkinson's Cycle style design unfortunately leaves it a bit more anemic than it should be and that combined with a fuel-efficient powertrain programming leaves the engine wanting. It's a shame really.

That's cuz it sucks. Well deserved Toyota for thinking your reputation will carry you through putting out a poor design.

To be fair, the basic concept of the 2GR-FKS is not a bad one, but it suffers from CAFE Standards being a main design goal. It's Atkinson's Cycle style design unfortunately leaves it a bit more anemic than it should be and that combined with a fuel-efficient powertrain programming leaves the engine wanting. See that's the thing, it is not an Atkinson's cycle motor. It has computer programming that mimics the Atkinson cycle during certain conditions. It's a joke. I agree, what a shame.

Have a neighbor that went through three of them and he lawyered up to have the dealer buy them back every time. He decided to jump ship and bought a diesel Colorado. He hasn't looked back since.

My buddy got a Taco TRD Pro back in November and so far so good. He only has about 8k miles on it though. I've actually been quite impressed by it's off road performance. Bone stock it's kept up with my 4R on every obstacle except for when approach/departure angle were a factor. I would even say it did better in the mud with the stock tires than my 4R did with KO2's, although that probably has more to do with overall weight and weight distribution.
