This is right at the corners where the chrome meets the tailgate itself. Is there anything I can do about this? Should I even be concerned with it?

Yeah... I've never been all that happy with the quality of the chrome. I was thinking of plasti-dipping it and being done with it.

My silver tailgate is rusting from the inside out. It is so bad in a couple of spots that if I were to push too hard on the rust spot I think I could go all the way through. I had to replace my rear window regulator because it rusted and broke... and while I was in there I puked a little bit in my mouth when I saw how bad the INSIDE of the tailgate is rusted. The whole damn thing is junk. I cannot believe the corrosion prevention on a vehicle that is this new.

Looks like Toyota's corrosion warranty is 60 months... so I'm not gonna hold my breath for coverage on a 2006 runner. Not a bad idea though for folks that still fall under that coverage window.
As for addressing my issue, I'm strongly considering replacing all of the chrome pieces on my runner... though I might start with the cheaper route of plastidip.
Does anyone have a good guide for repairing the existing rust that's already burrowed into the paint?

So I'm really hoping the rust is just skin deep. If so, I'm hoping I can just sand away the rusted areas and use some touch-up paint without having to re-prime it.
The plan right now is to remove the trim to see just how bad it is under there. Once I've got the paint fixed up, I'll plastidip the trim and re-install.
I'd like to make sure to get the plastidip all the way around to where the trim meet the paint. Does anyone know if doing this will prevent the trim from fastening correctly to the door?

I don't think it would affect the fastening by using the plastic-dip on all sides.
I have this too, and have seen a write up somewhere here or toyota120.com, as others seem to have the same issue.
I'm trying to think of/find a way to prevent the garnish from wearing away the paint again however, so its worth the time.

Yeah, that last part is my same worry. I figure the choice is to either replace the handle with a colored handle, or just plastidip it.
Since plastidip is cheap, and the handle is upwards of $160 (2006 TOYOTA 4RUNNER Parts - Conicelli Parts Center), I figured I'd start with the plastidip and go from there.

Not a bad plan. It sounds like you do realize that the garnish is not the rusty part, despite what it looks like. But that garnish causes the trouble none-the-less.
Wonder if rtv sealant around the edge when reinstalling could help? Either way, keep us updated on your progress. I plan to do this and then try to get up underneath and use por-15 or something on my frame/under sometime this summer.
