tailshaft bushing ?

4.10 gears. Waky overdrive to make it fuel efficient. Driveshaft spinning like, FAST! All things that would tend to wear out the tailshaft bushing.

Do these trucks commonly need tailshaft bushings?

Mine still has a "rumble" in the driveline - despite a brand-new driveshaft. The splines are new on the driveshaft, of course, and they seem to be masking the problem as there is no movement I can cause with my hands.

I bought a transmission mount from rock auto. Holes aren't quite right so I could not install it. They refunded me and let me keep it In the spring I will take a drill and a small grinder tool to the inside of those holes. That might just fix it.

Rumble is not always there and never the same twice, but occurs between 40 and 50 mph. It's very minor but I'd like to be rid of it...

I haven't heard of that as an issue. The output shaft on the 2WD trucks is 1-piece, so the load from any vibrations, etc. would be shared through the transmission. The 4WD transfer cases do have issues with output bearings sometimes, but that is a different setup. It could also be the diff pinion bearing causing problems.

The wrong transmission mount could have been a 2WD vs. 4WD thing? I'm not sure...

Are all your u-joints healthy and well lubed?

My long-gone '96 4runner had a vibration at a narrow speed range (55-60?) that went away forever after some greasy love.

When the pinion bearing started going out on my rig it started out as a faint rumble.

No - the bushing inside the tailshaft where the yoke spins in the trans.

Ah.. ok. The other side. I never had one go bad in my 80s Toyota 2wd pickups. I owned 2 of those both 1987.
