Tax returns = OME lift time!

Hey all!

So, after a rather sizable tax return, I've decided to pull the trigger on an OME lift kit from ToyTec. She needs new struts and shocks anyway, so I figured this would be the time to do the lift, especially with a few more frequent wheeling plans this summer.

I really want to do this on my own, but I also know my own limitations. I don't have all of the amenities of my father's garage back in Michigan. I am a believer in DIY and I do like getting to know my truck better (even if it sometimes goes horribly wrong). However, without a garage and the necessary tools (like jacks and wheel stands) I have few options.

Anyone know what the going rate to get it installed in Denver is lately? I've never been out or met anyone from the forum in the Denver area in real life and I feel like asking someone to guide/help me through it would be a tall order.

Also, what exactly should I order on ToyTec's website? Do I get the OME 881 front coils if I'm not getting the 3" spacers? What rear coils do I get if I want to level the truck out? Is their front shock assembly competitively priced? Is front coil-over assembly something the installer would be able to do and include in the price? Shock stone guards?

Do you guys smell that? What is it? I smell lift party! I'd be down to throw in a hand to help out. I have a garage but it's not good for these types of use (plus my landlord gets pissed when I use it to work on my rig) but I can offer my helping hands.

Before you pull the trigger on the OME lift kit I would strongly reconsider. I have the comfort ride shocks in the rear and adjustable 5100's in the front. If I were to do it again I would still stick with the 890's in the rear but just pair them up with some Billies. The OME stuff just seems to be too stiff for my liking. Find some Tundra's for the front. Get the adjustable 5100s and set them on the 3rd perch, the Billies for the rear (not sure the model off the top of my head) and the 890's for the rear. That's what I would do. Use the left over money to do a diff drop and maybe a 1 inch bl.

Sound advice! I too have the OME 881/890 lift paired with their "comfort" shocks. I too would probably select a different rear shock to pair with the 890s if I had to do it over again. At some point I might swap the rear shocks... if they bug me too much. I got mine installed at High Country, which had the best prices going at the time... they did an OK job, and re-checked all of the torque specs after 500 miles. Wish I could help ya out on the install myself, but I too know my limitations. ;-) Let me know if you have any questions!

WrexHAmm mentions the lift like what I have on my rig, except 890s instead of LC coils. Check out the Lift link in my signature. I'm pretty sure I have the rear Bilstein model somewheres in there (closer to the end). I also just went to the third notch on my Billies with the Tundra TRD springs and love the stance now with my LC's.

As for lifting, I'm sure some of us here in Denver could all get together and help out--get it done a lot faster too. I don't know the going rate to put in a lift, but I would imagine a shop would do it for around $300-400, depending on labor rates. However, once you know how to do it, it's not too hard.

The only part I would consider having a shop do instead is putting together the front shocks/springs coilover. If you're going to buy from Toytec (seeing how they're local anyways) you may want to spend the extra $100 to have them put the fronts together with new tophat and bolts/nuts.

Either way you go, Good luck with your build!

Dude! bring it over to my house. I helped Aeroneer1 lift his a few weeks ago. and if CoMarc wants to help out he's right up the block from me. Me and Aeroneer1 did his whole lift in like 3-4 hours. I don't have all kinds of crazy tools but I have what is neccessary to do it (hand tools, jack stands, a garage, nice floor jack, ect.). Like CoMarc says, just get a shop to put together your front coilovers.

Ha, that's pretty funny, I was just thinking the same thing as I *floated* my way into work on my squishy shocks... it is actually coming down to a safety thing now because of the float/brake-dive/etc.

I've got a garage and tools to do the job, aside from the spring compressor part, but I don't like playing with those anyway.

As for the other suggestions: is there really that much of a difference between TRD and OMEs up front?

If anyone can throw out that Billstein part number for the rears, that'd be awesome. One of my main reasons for wanting OME in the back is for hauling gear without draggin *** - the 890's seem like the perfect solution, but I want to keep the ride as comfy as possible.

To the OP, when are you planning on doing this?

Sounds like you have many people willing to help out. I did my own install and it wasn't to bad at all. Just a few trial and error moments but in the end I was happy I didn't pay somebody to do it. I wouldn't mind throwing some top plate spacers on my fronts (yes I know I can go up a notch but I don't want to :P) while we are busy messing around.

OP, let me know if you plan on going up to Toytec. I need a few things from there too, possibly carpool? You could always in the least check out my rig to get an idea of what you want to order.

OME 881/890 gives a nice level, capable ride. However, the Tundra TRD's upfront are progressive rate springs where as the OME's are specific rate springs. (I think anyway) It'll definitely ride nice with the Tundra TRD springs. But, it won't be terrible with the OME's front and rear either.

I agree with what everyone else has said about the shocks though. Even is adjustables aren't in the budget right now, the Bilstein HD's would be a better bet than the OME shocks. You can get all 4 Billies from AJUSA.com for like $260 shipped.

Whew! What a response! It's a lot to take in but I think I really will take up the offer of a beer induced lift party.

I was planning on doing it soon, but my schedule is rather non-traditional. I usually work weekends and have midweek off. However, the latest I work on Sunday's is 6pm, and 7pm on Saturdays.

I'm going to take some time to read the other responses about coil/shock combinations to get a better idea of what I want to get.

Thanks all! I'll be in touch.

Cheers,
Tony

i've been wanting to take a sick day anyway

i think i'm going to pull the trigger on some toytec/eibach 3" springs... so if i like the ride, i might have some TRD Tundra springs available for purchase. I might get my new set up in this weekend, not sure tho. If you're interested, i'll let you know what i end up doing.

So, what I'm hearing is get the Bilsteins in the back.

One other question! If I decide not to go the full 3", do I have the option of just adding spacers later if I want that extra half inch, or is it now or never?

Hungry, I think I'm interested. What are the benefits of the Tundra springs over the OME springs? Also, I'll take you up on the invite. Let's figure out a day that works for people! I'm just trying to figure out which day playing outside I want to sacrifice for this.

So far I'm free Wednesday the 21st, Monday the 26th after 3pm, and Wednesday or Thursday the 28th or 29th.

Toytec springs? Do you mean Eibachs and what advantage do these offer over OME 881s?
Which Bilsteins are you referring to?

How does the LC spring rate compare to the 890 (i.e., I don't want rear sag due to gear in the back)?

Yes, you have the option to use spacers, but I don't suggest using any spacers if you can help it. That's what makes the adjustable Bilsteins great! I believe Eddy tried some spacers on top of his front setup and the ride got a lot harsher.

TRD Tundra coils up front tend to be a softer ride and pair really well with the Adj Bilsteins. Lots of info on this setup out there, and lots run it. However, that means you gotta find some Tundra coils first. The big difference (as I read it) is the OMEs are a bit stiffer which is good if you're running a heavier aftermarket bumper.

I've been running OME 883 up front, 891 in rear with OME comfort shocks for several years and think its a great combo, with the perfect stance. I occasionally do some fairly heavy towing and the 891's don't sag a bit. The ride is on the stiff side but I like that, it rides like a truck. I originally went with 883's because I had plans on one day running a heavy plate bumper, ran the 883's for 3 years before I ever got one and I can't tell a difference between stock and the 100lb+ front bumper. For the price, i don't think OME can be beat, especially if you do any towing.

x2 i have a spacer on top of my TRD/Bilstein combo (to level out) and that's the reason i'm thinking of changing my set up. I want to eliminate the need for a spacer because the ride was rough.
