Tcase fluid??!!

So my 4th Gen is at the mechanic for a steering problem. After a big home DIY maintenance the only thing I hadn't had time to do was change Tcase oil. So since it's already on the lift, I called him back and said change my diff oil; since it saves some mess and gear oil stink at home plus tht temp is like -25c.

My mechanic calls Toyota to find out what grade to use, since I forgot to tell him which oil to use. The Toyota dealer told him not to use synthetic, but to use regular gear oil, and that they don't take synthetic in those trucks but can only use regular oil...?? WHAT??? :mad2: Are they serious??!! :mad2:

Where do they come up with this crazy stuff? :mad2: So now I have regular gear oil in my tcase that's been running synthetic since I got it. :mad2:

I'm actually debating whether to put synthetic in there or regular oil in my diffs and t case. I change my fluids frequently so going regular is fine.

3 years ago I had a low mileage 2002 Tacoma 4x4. I changed the rear diff fluid to mobil 1 synthetic 75w90. Few days later I noticed my the back side of my right rear drum brakes full of oil. The right axle oil seal went out. This was the cause of using synthetic oil as the oil is more slippery and the rubber seals weren't used to this and started to leak with the new fluid.

When I sold my truck. The person who bought my truck was a Toyota Technical teacher that taught many courses to Toyota Mechanics. So he knew his stuff.

I told him I put synthetic in my manual tranny too. He said my tranny felt strange so he was going to put regular oil in there. He also said he was going to regular oil in the diffs too.

The 5th generation 4runner uses synthetic oil in the transfer case. Its a special 80w only weight. One guy bought 2 liters from toyota for $60.
