So this adventure starts off with me relocating back to Kansas City, Mo after a 2 yr relocation run with my company in Wichita, KS. I quit the Corp Job after 15 years and went to work at a family owned company which meant I was back in KC. It also means I had to give up the free company car. So off to pick a new car to drive.
I test drove a hand full of different cars but kept going back to look at 4runners. I've always loved the first gens but i needed a daily driver and this time i had a bit more funding to get something new and nice and still make some necessary improvements.
I stumbled onto this ad one sunday morning on Craigslist.

I was the 2nd person to get in contact with the seller so the first guy had the rights to it. I kept offering more, knowing the other buyer was just probably a CL troll looking to try and flip it for some quick cash. After a VERY long process i managed to buy the car from the seller for $4k. It had 194k mostly highway miles and it ran a good portion of those on dirt roads. Super clean other than the dead motor and the dirt that collects when you live on a dirt road and dont wash your car much.

The P.O. claimed their ASCE certified mechanics inspected the car and that the pistons were frozen/locked into the cylinder and that the motor was toast. I could tell that they had let it overheat as there was coolant stains all over the engine compartment. I towed it home and without hesitation my curiosity said, but a fresh battery in it and lets see whats really broken.
Dam thing fired right up. It had a tick, like a lower end tick but ran like a top. I only let it run for about 30 seconds but was stumped. Then it occurred to me that if it overheated, then there's probably no coolant in the block. I filled it with tap water and repeated the investigation. This time you could tell that the head gasket had blown and was dumping water into the cylinder(s).

So knowing that the engine was overheated, had almost 200k on the odo and a nice oil leak, I decided to search a new engine. Scored a 34k mile motor from a 2008 T4R from car-part.com and started the engine removal process.

Old Engine came out pretty easy. Had it out in a day and waited for the new one.

Dropped the new one in and turned the key. Dam thing fired up on the first try. Iver dropped in probably about 10-12 motors in my time an never had one fire up perfect the first turn of the key. I should have gone straight to the store and bought a lottery ticket. anyway...

So, my Craigslist searching paid off the next weekend with this little baby just a few hours north of me in DesMoines. Nice Shrockworks Front bumper in excellent condition, just needing a little cleanup and new paint/powdercoat. The guy I bought it from bought his truck with this bumper already on it and took it to the dealer to have it removed as it didn't fit the look he wanted. I didn't say much else other than thanks for the deal. Scooped the front bumper for $400.

So now its licensed, legal and driving me to work till I source my suspension upgrades.

I intend to get a double swing-out rear bumper/carrier from CBI. Man, if could only find one of those on craigslist too :) So I will be running a front heavy bumper ( winch in the future ) and a heavy rear bumper with tire carrier. Sliders are going to happen too.
Coming from the FJ-40 world i was already familiar with the reputation of OME suspension and started to research this first. Too many people on here were speaking of their dislike for the OME set up so I started looking into the ToyTec Ulimate, as Icon is just to far beyond my budget. I know that a lot of people really enjoy their TT Ultimate set up but what I can't find out is if the springs are really set up for the additional weight I plan to carry. Also, im tempted to do a 1" BL and I need to make that decision before I talk to the guys at CBI as that's one big factor in the rear bumper.

I've read about the first 50 pages of the suspension FAQ and will continue to do more research but I know sometimes its easier to just ask the question that's been asked a bunch. Any thoughts on the Lift considering the weight? My only other thought was an OW set up, but half way thru my research I leaned Im about a year late on that deal so no luck picking their brains.

Anyway, heres how she sits, stock and ready to be upgraded.

Good find! and the bumper too! How much did you score that engine for? Mines blown a headgasket and I'm looking for one as well.

How much did that motor run you?

Wow, what an intro! An engine swap then a cheap CL shrockworks...

Welcome to the forum!

The OW suspension is still available through Radflo if you ask for OW specs, but I dunno how helpful the OW guys will be since they aren't in business any more.

There are tons of options for front suspension from the cheap(isn) OME setup to the coil overs.

It sounds like for your plans though, Radflo or TT would be the best bet for the extra weight and staying within budget. The debate over OW vs. TT Ultimate is as old as the suspension setups are, the biggest things are this
OW
- rebuildable (also a con as it means they will *have* to be rebuilt eventually)
- designed/valved specifically for 4Rs
- "easier" to adjust
- larger shock bodies and shafts
- handles bumps/ruts at speed very well (at least mine did)
- some people have complained of clunking
- will squeak after some time due to the heims at the mounting points
TT
- lifetime warranty on shocks (not rebuildable)
- quiet due to bushings at mounting points
- requires two wrenches to adjust
- designed/valved for FJ Cruiser

If you're getting the rear bumper, most people go with the All Pro 3.5" coils although I think the MetalTech long travel (semi-new to the market) should also be able to handle it and I've heard a lot of great things about it.

If you're planning on putting all it sounds like into the 4R, I'd go ahead with the 1" BL. Most people seem to end up wanting it and once you start adding bumpers and sliders it'll be too late if you don't plan for it from the start.

I got my motor from Andy at Diamond Auto in Frontenac Wisconsin. They had a 2008 with 34k miles. They were asking $2500 for the motor, plus $200 for shipping and another $300 for core. I hate the core scam some yards play, but hey, its still a 34k mile motor to my door for $3k. Your going to get a long block with an intake typically. No accessories like starter, alternator, a/c comp... I ended up working a deal to get the accessories from the same motor so I had a full motor with 34k and not a block with 34k and an alternator with 200k. Now I have a set of factory trail spares to get me out of a jam if i need it. Its not a cheap as just buying the parts from auto-zone/O'Reilly, but you get factory OEM parts, not some rebuilt pos.

One thing that I've done with some success in the past is when I call the salvage yard about the new motor, get the VIN number of that vehicle. Then google the VIN. Sometimes, if your lucky, you can still find the listing in google cache. It may have pics of the car or give you some indication as to what the damage is. There are SOOOOOO many cars out there in yards with flood damage from Sandy or Katrina and it helps to have a little assurance that the motor your getting is from a car in a wreck and not one with prior floor salvage. You can see if the vehicle had flipped over or just a standard collision. Also, I got the build sheet from a local dealer so i knew all the vehicle options and was able to verify it was what the salvage yard claimed it was.

Ive got the old motor sitting on a stand in the garage. not sure what ill do with it just yet.

Thanks for the tip on the All Pro, I'll start to do some research on them and the MT long travels. The only hesitation I had towards the OW set up was all the people complaining about the noises coming from their RadFlo's.

While is sit and wait for the CBI Bumper and suspension to arrive, I got busy with the wiring for the lighting.

I started searching for switches and relay to control the lights and stumbled on the Bussman Relay boxes on these threads.

Auxiliary fuse/relay panel

Custom Relay and Fuse Box for Accessories (sPOD knockoff) - JeepForum.com

This was exactly what I was looking for to control the accessories both now and options in the future. I had a 3 day holiday weekend with no lift so i started to work on the relay boxes.

These Bussman boxes are weather tight and I ran WeatherPak connectors to keep everything clean and hopefully free from corrosion.

Here's a quick shot of the small LED bars under the hood.

I plan to run two relay control boxes.

The first box will run 2 fused circuits for items like USB charger or other misc powered items in the cab. It will also run 4 switch controlled relays. The switch circuits are on a fused line and the higher draw items are picked with a relay and on a fused line. The first box will control front Hella Compact 4000's and the PIAA lamps on the Shrockworks bumper. It will also control the LED light that i mount to the rear telescope light on my soon to arrive CBI Rear bumper. I also added a few LED bars under the hood to shine a little extra light when i pop the hood to check oil etc...

The second relay box will control roof front facing lights, side facing lights and a few extra relays for other goodies I may add over time. And again it has two extra fused circuits that I will leave for future farkles.

Found a home to mount each but had to do a little bit of relocated and made up some quick brackets to hold them.
