Test fitting JDM field monitor on my '97 SR5

I recently got my hands on a JDM field monitor for my '97 SR5. I do not have a sunroof; this is the unit without those controls.

While there are plenty of write-ups about the wiring and installation of these things, I haven't been able to find any good pictures or walk-throughs on how to install on a non-sunroof T4R.

I'd heard that it would be really easy, and I wouldn't have to cut my headliner. But after test fitting today, it looks like I will clearly need to cut it after all. I'm hoping someone who's done this same install will be able to tell me if there is indeed a bracket for the field monitor mounting screw underneath my headliner? I don't want to cut into the headliner more than necessary.

Is it true that the compass won't work though? I though I read somewhere gay because it was made in japan and programmed the compas doesn't work here properly?

If thats the case, it would still give you a general idea of north. There are 3 types of north, True, Magnetic and Grid. Because the earth has a slight wobble on its axis, the magnetic north changes slightly.

The compass of the field monitor does work, in 22.5 degree increments. It's the much rarer GPS unit that doesn't work outside Japan (or something like that). Lots of T4R people have functioning field monitors.

is it possible to take a peek behind the headliner opening to check if the bracket is available? maybe you can use a phone camera or something else to look into it

I'm sorry, I didn't realize you had old style with no sunroof. All the ones I have seen have sunroof or sunglass holder there which provides the screw.

I would do what was mentioned and try and look up in there or cut a small access hole. Even if there is no screw you can always come up with a way to secure it.

Is 81218-35010 the part #? Roof Lamp Assembly Bracket - Toyota (81218-35010)

I think that might mount up to the existing holes you have.

Thanks! You're right—I've been scouring the forums for a week and haven't found a single person who knows what's up there behind the headliner for the non-sunroof version. Which is a little frustrating because I've read comments from people who say they've done this same install (FMU on a non-sunroof model). But no replies that shed any light on the matter.

On the bright side, I've got to cut the headliner no matter what in order to get the thing flush. So I'll start small and document the process for those who come after me

Not trying to be a smart-ass, but why not just drop the headliner?
It really doesn't take that long. The sunroof headliner is more detailed and I can drop the front half in a matter of minutes.
