Testing 2004 Landcruiser vs. 2007 4Runner non biased comparison

Ok here goes just a mini review of these two vehicles. My mom has a 2004 Landcruiser and I got a new 2007 4Runner for christmas this year. I have spent at least 5k driving in each vehicle and here is my comparison.

2004 LandCruiser

World Renowned as the go-anywhere do anything ultra-reliable truck LandCruiser is a legend. The only truck the UN has used to drive through the toughest terrain to save some underprivileged villagers in the middle of the jungle.

Driving:

The drive in the Landcruiser is unbelievable. Not only is non vvti engine super smooth, but transmission shifts are seamless and the car doesnt ***** about driving over anything. I honestly think you could jump curbs in this all day. It honestly does not flinch one bit.

Interior:

Super luxurious, super quiet, there are some rattles after 70k miles and the leather makes annoying squeaks as you go over bumps.

Exterior:

Love the styling

2007 4Runner V8:

Driving: super nice as well, handles bumps and obstacles without losing composure. Super quick with the V8 engine - it easily throws you back in the seat even accelerating to 100mph (yes I got to 110 one day) I try not to push it because Im afraid of the shitty dunlops vaporizing

Interior:

has what you need and nothing else, love the fabric seats however WTF.... just please give me some headroom!

Exterior: love the styling, the front is super aggressive looking

Here's the comparison. Obviously there is a 40k price difference in the vehicles and that is felt almost everywhere.

Driving:

Although the 4runner drives great, the LandCruiser is MUCH more stable on the highway with 5 people in it. IDK what it is in the 4R but the stability is just not there...maybe its the shitty tires IDK but the LC feels much more stable on the highway fully loaded. The 4runner blows the LC off the line especially with the help of the vvti. I can corner in the 4r like a sports car whereas the LC feels like driving a double decker bus.

Interior:

LC blows away the 4r in terms of creature comforts, noise level, and comfort.

The seats in the LC are AMAZING

The AC in the LC is MUCH better, the car cools off in about 3 seconds - takes a bit longer in the 4r

Exterior:

LC has a MUCH better paint finish than the 4r.

DriveTrain:

Not all of that 40k is put into the interior...the LC's transfer case is about twice the size, frame is beefier, front control arms/ all hook ups are visibly larger(can tell just from looking underneath)

I am convinced that the engines are not the same. The iforce is not the same as the 4700 that they have in the LC - i believe that they only share the engine block and maybe a couple of other components.

Conclusion:

Both trucks have excellent road manners - fully loaded however the LC is much more stable.

I love my 4r and recognize how fortunate I am to be driving one as my car especially only being 19.

I love the LC too, driving it just feels like your driving something that is totally indestructable- more so than the 4r and its a legend!

In the end, the LC is just better built than the 4r. Materials used are better, drivetrain is beefier but then again that is where the 40k price difference is.

wtf is with the cheap plastic all over the inside of the 4r that scratches SO easily????

This is my Mom's second LC. She had a 99, drove it for 5 years, put 90k on it with not ONE problem other than dead battery. Got second one in 04 - 67k and not ONE thing wrong. Certainly has won my mom's heart over so she is getting a LX570 next summer.

P.S. Nothing drives like my dad's 550i LOL!

Very cool and yes, you are lucky:biggrin2:

The differences in the engine are interesting to hear about. I'd like to know more.

As far as the stability goes I think the additional weight and track probably account for most of that. The T4R's are pretty light in comparison with the LC. I suspect some formats of the T4R would really exlempify this. (V6 2wd and I suspect in other markets there may be an even lighter drivetrain). The difference in track has to help.

In order for a short & narrow vehicle to not be easily flipped the springs, shocks and anti-roll bars have to be a bit stiffer. I suspect this combined with the ratio of sprung weight to unsprung weight is why the T4R doesn't ride quite as well.

I dont know much more about the engines. They are similar however they are not the same. I can tell you that Toyota/Lexus would not put the same engine in the 4r/sequoia that the landcruiser and lx470 have.

Im going to try and find out exactly what iForce is because it means something...something that the landcruiser and lx470 dont have.

I also feel that the engines in the LC/Lx470 are smoother than the ones in the 4r.

The 4r/gx470/sequoia have the same engine and the lx470/lc have the same engine, the engine is not the same in all 5 f these models.

They do share the same block though.

Just a quick research yields that the intake systems are different on the engines. iForce is used to variable control induction whereas the LC/lx doesnt have that. It is meant for towing and that is why it was introduced into the sequoia/4r...the lc is not a tow vehicle AT ALL!

The LandCruiser is so heavy that its nickname is the LandBruiser. A great vehicle, but really an apples and oranges comparison to the 4Runner.

I wonder if part of the engine difference isn't the absents of the EGR system in the 4r / GX, and the LX/LC has it, which makes the engines smoother.

I have to chime in

Sorry to bust anyones bubble on the first post - The UN buys all sorts of 4X4s.

Including Nissan Patrols, Range Rovers, Land Rovers and I beleive occasionally Chevys, Fords etc

Ive worn a blue cap - and I drove a Patrol for awhile under their Logo

and can your dad adopt me, free cars for everyone!!

The most popular vehicle purchased for extreme conditions is the LC. They dont buy jeeps/chevys to go roaming around Iraq in because of fear of breaking down. The UN has ordered upwards of 70k LC's in the last 10 years alone and have been receiving about 100 new ones EACH day!

Does the UN get gassers or diesels or does it depend on where it's going?

More likely diesels since it's in good supply around the world. Also you need that torque to pull away from sniper fire or RPGs fired from a buildng.

There is a reason why the LC cost more compared to the V8 4Runner. You can have two Gen 4 V8 SR5 4WD 4Runners for the price of one current gen LC.

Currently weighing the pros and cons. My V6 4th gen might be toast after being in a collision and I am leaning towards a 100 series land cruiser, but I’m not 100% committed yet as I’m trying to get used to the lower miles per gallon. Going from 22 mpg highway to 17 (at best) is a monetary consideration. However, I only drive at most 5,000 mi/yr so the added comfort of the LC might make up for that. I do love my T4R though.

For those that have switched over to an LC, do you have any regrets?
