**The Duster 2.0 - 00' 4Runner SR5**

Welcome back!
Sorry to say, I stopped seeing the Old Dirtduster in my lot at work this last Winter--- I think my work colleague may have sold it...
I've POR15 several vehicles the last few years including my 4Runner. Its great stuff! I must admit I haven't done much to mine recently, I did intend to do the front bushings this year-- I have a second set of UCA/LCA's prepped but I got side tracked by boats and kids car projects... maybe in the Spring! Finding time is really the hard part..

Anyways, Looks like the rig is really coming along! I'll be following and enjoying the your build progress!
 
That really was quite the tease - as some one who has binged all your previous build threads (and many other threads on this forum) it's pretty fun looking forward to the next update. Thanks for all the inspiration, keep up the good work!

Thanks for dropping in! I wonder how the OG Duster is going?! I'll have to keep my eyes out for it... somehow it usually ends up popping back up on the forums somewhere.

Refreshing all the bushings in these things is a game changer. Totally changes the truck. Get after it! Haha... life is busy though, I certainly understand that.

Appreciate the kind words and the time for checking out my threads! It's funny how the forums are fading... it's nice to see people back on here waiting for updates rather than skimming IG for a post. I'm on both but certainly appreciate the details found on the forums.

UPDATE

Where do I start?

The truck is on the road. Yay! Lots of hours and it's nice to be able to actually drive the thing. First off, we had to do some scouting for our yearly Colossal 4x4 Event so it was a great time to give the Duster2 a good shakedown with all the new parts.

Not just grab someone else's tracks and head out, but rather explore on your own and then when you do find something cool, the reward is that much greater. Some highlights from our trip. Back to the shakedown run on the truck:

With this build i wanted to SIMPLIFY - or at least try to. I want to spend more time camping/exploring and hanging with my wife and new daughter than wrenching. I'm super OCD so when stuff is on it's way out on my truck I just have to fix it. Any noise or start of an issue is remedied immediately. I love all the fancy suspension but I hated replacing heims and uniballs. With that in mind I went with the following suspension setup on the Duster2. I might miss the high performance suspension for the high speed stuff but have traded it for low maintenance. Once I have another daily and the means to go LT, things may change but for now here's the setup:

FRONT
- Bilstein 6112 (1st Gen Tundra P/N: 47-260337) with the spec'd 650lb coils on the 3/4 perch
- [MENTION=28464]eimkeith[/MENTION] strut tower reinforcement kit and 10" limit straps
- SPC UCA's on the "F" setting
- Plastics Guy Durobumps
- New OEM Toyota UCA's
- TC spindle gussets
- TC cam tab gussets

Notes:

I initially had the Tundra 6112's on the 2/3rd perch but found I was only about 1.25" of lift after it settled. I brought them back in and bumper them up the the 3/4th perch and things are sitting closer to the 2" mark now. (I need to measure hub to fender). I like that they have the extended length like the Ext. Kings/Icons/Fox's so I am able to get some more travel out of them with the SPC UCA's vs a standard 4Runner 6112. I think the ride quality is amazing on the 650lb coils. Some people are switching to the 600's but I personally would not do this. I am almost wondering if they will be too soft for my taste once the bumper and winch go on but time will tell. I would describe them as slighty firmer (kinda close to my old Icons) but not stiff by any means. Good for a highway cruiser like my rig when it's not on the trail. On the high speed gravel they perform a lot better than a 5100 but I would say they are just not valved as good next to my old Icon's and Fox's and I can notice a decrease in performance for sure. I was pretty happy though as I didn't notice any shock fade over some hard prolonged abuse. I did expect the downsides though, and for the cost and low maintenance, that is the trade-off. That being said I am happy with them so far, for what they are. All the Eimkeith parts are absolutely dialed in and I am sure the limit straps and gussets will help keep the shocks happy for a long time and increase their reliability/durability. Plus it will ensure the shocks don't snap in half with repetitive abuse (like an Icon coilover did this weekend, without limit straps).

REAR

- Bilstein 5160 (4th gen P/N: 25-227611)
- EimKeith ULR kit
- Eimkeith Panhard Correction Kit
- Plastics Guy Durobumps
- LC 7 wrap coils

Notes:

The 4th Gen rear shocks give enough droop length to work with the 7 wraps but do require you to lose some bump or uptravel. I'd like to play around with this and get some uptravel back but I will tinker with this over time to try and optimize. The rear shock valving is OK, could be a little slower on the rebound side when loaded but is an improvement over a typical 3rd gen rear spec'd shock. Again, low maintenance here was the key. I did notice a little shock fade in the rear over prolongued use but it was not terrible. I wish Bilstein made a 2.5" 6150 rear shock. The EimKeith panhard is a God-send and makes the rear end feel so much more stable with the raised roll center. I have too much rake right now but am expecting the truck to settle out once the rear bumper and sleeping platform are installed. Will see how those rear shocks do once it's loaded up.

Finally finished the boat! AND sold it! Finally! Maybe after I return from my trip this Fall, I'll try to get to those bushings! I must admit I heard more rattles as this Summer passed... it's probably past time! I hope this tightens up the front end, somewhat. Aside from the somewhat sloppy front end, its running like a top! It's great to see continuing forum contributors still participating like yourself! I'll be following!

Excited to see where this build goes! I am in need of a welder for me to buy and install parts from Emkeith soon. This Fall is certainly on the plan before coat the frame with the Eastwood Rust Encapsulator (LOVE this stuff so far - use the internal frame spray too).
 
Been a fan of your Colossal trip reports for a while now.
Also really liked the LineX job on the Cruiser. Was the first Bed liner job I actually liked.

Looks like you’ve got your a good runner on your hands. If you ever want to do a Colossal trip in Washington State I’d love to be apart of it!

Oooohhh I'll have to look into that internal frame spray. I bought a little Lincoln 110 a few years ago just to tinker and this summer bought a Everlast 110V. It's insane how the new inverter technology helps with the Everlast. I am pretty confident welding 1/4" plate with the little thing... takes a little longer as you gotta let it cool down and rest but what a great welder (and skill) to learn as you get further into the 4x4 rabbit hole.

Thanks! Yah the LineX jobs are hit and miss but I think if you pay for the real deal and get the clearcoat added on, it makes the finish not fade and look more professional than all the DIY jobs out there (which look horrific IMO). Plus the 80-series had great bodylines to line the paintjob up with. I don't think it would work on the 4Runner TBH.

The real Colossal is this weekend (above was the Pre-Run) so super stoked for that! I'd love to get down into Washington at some point. Or you could come up here and run Colossal anyway?? lol We've actually got 5 coming from Seattle this weekend.

Stoked to get the 4Runner up to speed. Massive build update coming in hot soon as it will have bumpers, sleeping platform, sliders, skids on in the next 2 weeks!
 
I'm interested to hear how the 6112's work for you being set on the 4th clip. I'm currently running Toytec Coilovers and think there has to be something better out there without spending the money on Kings/Icons/ADS/Radflo etc.

Good to know folks from Seattle are coming up. Might have to start planning for that. Just followed you on Instagram to follow what’s going on there as well.

True story. I just got back from 4 days of trails, camping, and high speed gravel. So far I'm quite happy with the 6112's (again, considering what they are) and I felt they more than handled all that I threw at them. If anything, the rear needs slower valving.... the 4th gen 5160's just aren't aggressive enough for my taste and a little soft. Liveable but I'll be searching to try something else (maybe a front LC80 5160, if they exist?).

Thanks for the follow. Interestingly enough, we are about to break off the "Colossal" name from Tamarack and start running it as it's own dedicated offroad adventure page. We even have a video series in the works but I can't divulge too much info on that now ;)
