**The Duster 2.0 - 00' 4Runner SR5**

Glad to see you back in the 3rd gen forum again. Looks like you have a great start going with the new 4runner. I am not as OG as some of these other guys but have followed your builds since before I got my 3rd gen in 2012. Always top notch work and very thought out. As with most of us "Older" guys, time to wrench and keep up on build threads is tough with family, work, and life priorities.

I look forward to seeing the progression of this one and i'm happy to hear that the goal is to do less wrenching on it and more enjoying it. I need to heed that advise myself.

Hahah still an OG dude, I've referenced your thread way too many times for trimming reference on how to clear big tires. Certainly funny seeing us "older guys" transition from modding our trucks all the time and updating the forum to being more family focused. I still love working on the truck and documenting mods but it is certainly harder than it used to be!

So far i have not been heading my own advice as I basically wrenched for 3 weeks straight to get the truck ready for Colossal and the Utah trip we just returned from. But the good thing there is that now I am at a point where I can slowly start ticking projects off my list as time allows. Modding in a rush is no fun at all.

Thanks for stopping by!

Still playing catch up on the media side of things... but I should be releasing a short Colossal write-up and photos soon. Followed by the Colossal 2019 after-movie and then we will get into the photos/video from our Utah trip. This was my 3rd time in the Moab area, second time going there specifically to wheel, and it did not disapoint. Can't wait to share all the stories and photos in due time.

A couple teaser's of the Duster in it's current state to tie you over ;)

Just caught up on the #2 Duster, and super stoked you have a 3rd gen again.

*Quick note, I wanted to reference your high idle issue. Personal experience for me: every time I have the engine apart for anything decently in depth (where the intake comes off, I clean sensors, etc etc) I get a high idle when it's all put back together. The first time it happened, i did all the same crap you did, and never felt like anything i DID actually fixed it...I had the sensation it just fixed itself. So the last time I had it happen after installing my Airaid intake tube, I just said screw it, and ignored the high idle. It dropped down to normal after about 3 drives. And I didn't do a damn thing. So whatever that's worth.

Truck looks great! It's a cool thing to build them when you already know exactly what you want to do.

I don't get on the forum but every month or so now... not sure how I missed your thread! I'm glad to see you back!!

Hey! Stoked to see you're still around. Still rocking that beauty thundercloud 4R?

Totally on the high idle. If I see something like this again I will be doing exactly that. FWIW I left the washers in place to take up the slack but everything has been working great now for about 12K miles.

Thanks for stopping by and glad to see you're around as well. It's true... not on the forums much anymore either. I need to read up on your cable e-locker setup.

REAR COILS

What is everyone running these days? I was in a set of Dobinsons progressive LT coils in my 4th gen and absolutely loved them. Rode great unloaded and had minimal sag once geared up for camping.

I'd like to achieve 2.5-3" of unloaded lift in this. No rear bumper for a few months so I am probably willing to swap coils later if/when I do a swing out. Is the Toytec Superflex the only 3rd Gen specific variable rate rear coil spring?

Any suggestions?

Rear Coil Research:

OME 890 - linear rate, 2.5" lift, 435/425mm, 15mm wire, 188.4LB

Dobinsons C59-675V (4th Gen) - Variable rate, 3" lift, 470/470mm, 16mm wire, 157-230LB variable

Metal Tech (4th Gen) MT-GSJ-4050 LT Coils - Variable rate, ??? lift, 489/489mm (top wrap designed as a keeper - not as tall as free height reflects), 104-220LB variable

LC 8 wrap - digging for specs

Toytec Superflex - variable rate, 3-3.75" lift, XXmm wire, XXXX Length, 240LB

Did you every find the free height of the Superflex coils? I can't seem to find any info on them other than Ripcord's 2.0 thread where he mentions 19.5 and being identical to 861's.
However everywhere else says that 861's are 18.89"FH.
I am pulling my 861's and wanting around 3" in the rear with rear bumper and swingout. Considering the Dobinson's 675V's, or a some 8 wraps.

No I did not. I'd love to get down to even 2.5" rear lift with all the weight/rear bumper and still be able to have the benefits of all that free height. The 675V is that a 4th gen Dobinsons spring? I wonder if we got a bunch of people together if Crikeymike could make a progressive coil designed for these types of applications. Considering the amount of people running Land Cruiser coils on their 4Runners, it seems like there could be a business case for a 4Runner/Surf specific coil that achieves what we want?!

RE-INTRODUCTION:Sure the 3rd Gen's have their downfalls but I do love the sense that your driving an "old Toyota" with the build quality of the mid-90's and early 00's that has ultimately created the brand following that Toyota has today. The 3rd gen is the right mix of reliability, comfort, and an analog driving experience with a growing hint of nostalgia.

You summed up my feelings about this truck better than anything.

The 675V is a 4th gen superflex coil. I know Black798 is running the 210V from Dobs and they are the stock height LC coil. He said he was lower than the 861's by about .5" if I recall correctly. I'd have to sort through my IG dm's to find it.

The specs I have found are:
861's - 220lbs - 480/490 fh
210V - 160-239lbs - 475/485 fh
675V - 157-230lbs - 470-470 fh
Superflex - 210lbs - 495 fh
LC oem - 160lbs - fh varies

The 675V would be .2" lower than the 210V's, so that is headed in the right direction.

I think I read somewhere that Crikeymike could do a run if 20 were involved. My requests would be a long travel coil, max of 3.0" lift height, and designed for maybe an extra 100lbs of weight over stock. I personally no longer have the mindset of "I have to have a big lift to go over things" as plenty are proving that 1-2" of lift and 35's is enough and fun.

Great info, thanks for sharing. I actually ran the 675V on my 4th gen and was just double checking we were talking about the same thing. They rode great (on the 4th gen) and I was super happy with them. Funny, as I was thinking about trying them on my 3rd gen. I didn't know anyone else was running 4th gen coils on their 3rd gen. I might just have to be the guinee pig as I am totally in the same mindset - lower is better!

Mike with Dobinson's is out of the country, so I sent an email to Dobinson's sales asking if it were possible to add another option to our platform if we had a minimum amount of orders.

Also since you are running 8 wraps, I would what the difference would be from those and the 675V's?

Awesome. I'm down to help rally the troops up if something like this makes sense. Thanks for getting the ball rolling.

I am running 7 or 7.5 wraps. I wish I measured free height before I through them in but I did not. Whatever they are, I want them to be lower and I actually think that they are too soft. After having the progressive coils in the 4th gen (the 675V and Metal Tech LT springs before those) it makes you kind of spoiled having dual rate springs. I think it just makes sense to have them slightly firmer in the rear as they compress - helps with bodyroll in the corners and also allows them to stretch way out for those droopy situations.

This is what I emailed to them:
"Hello,
I'm wondering if its possible to request a coil spring with certain specs if I can get x amount of orders for them?
I have a 2002 4runner, and I know a lot of us are desiring a smaller lift than whats available but a longer coil so that it doesn't fall out during large articulation.
Something with 55-60mm lift in a variable or progressive rate and long travel. Some of us do have a steel bumper with swingout or carry some extra weight in the cargo area, so they would maybe need to be a medium load spring for some. Not sure if its possible to offer a standard load and medium load easily without changing the specs a lot...that is your level of expertise.
If this is possible to do please let me know and any details you can share.
Thank you,"

I wouldn't mind seeing the 675V about a .5" shorter for us

4th gen / 5th gen / FJ rear OEM springs lift 3rd gens around 1" - so start there for your assumptions about fitting aftermarket rear springs.

The upper and lower coil diameters are also slightly bigger on the later gen springs, but fit well enough.

Forgive me if I missed it, but where did you come by the projector headlamp replacements? I'm a newbie to the group, just acquired a '99 T4R, boring old 2WD 4cyl. as my new daily. My headlamps work so-so, but there is peeling of some film just behind the glass and the reflector portion is a bit hazy on both. Thought about hitting the boneyards to see what I could find, but I like the way projectors focus the beam more tightly...nice look for the vehicle too.

He builds them himself. He used to sell them, but not anymore. There a lot of good threads on projector retrofits.
