The Mid Travel Thread

What else do you think you need to run an extended travel shock? diff spacers?

I don't think so or I don't know. Was wondering if you lose something with running extended travel shocks with stock LCA but uniball UCA vs a regular lengthy shock.

Reading your signature, and I been eyeing the icon exteneded travel CDC shocks. That's why

I enjoy my set up and it handles pretty good. The thing that made the biggest difference was the rear bumpstops. they make the rear end feel bottomless almost.

Guys! What is the length of stroke you are running on your front coil overs?

i have now rebuild my kings today, and removed the spacer to now make them "extended, but its kinds a weak ass shitty "extended" being only 1/2" longer stroke not real worth it. but they did need to rebuilt.

so whats your stroke length.

All I can say is the stock stroke length is 4.175". Your best bet is to call King and ask them.

right, and ive talked with them quite a bit today, but they said when you remove that 1/4" spacer it now becomes "extended"

not exactly the amount of improvement i was hoping for.

I had this conversation with them and other King suppliers. When we see two different shocks, one being standard, and the other, "extended", I think it is fair to say that they should be a fair amount different. The difference to me, and as far as numbers go, seems to be fairly negligible. But to be fair, I think there are plenty of other limiting factors when considering stroke and downward droop.

For instance, I recall hearing some talk about the difference between OEM ITRs and aftermarket ITRs. I read that some aftermarket ITRs have an ever so slightly limited range of downward motion vs. OEM. And while this might not ever really matter for pavement dwelling DDs, it isn't hard to imagine that full droop, beyond the limits of that piece's intended design, will have negative consequences and be the new limiting factor. So even if you could have more downward motion, it might wear out or damage other components that weren't designed for that geometry.

Still, sometimes it sounds like we are being sold a bill of goods. LOL.

Front: ADS 2.5" Coilovers with Remote Reservoirs. 14" 650 pound coil. 2nd Gen Wheelers Bumpstops. Camburg Uniball Upper Control Arms. Ride is fantastic.

Rear: Icon 2.5" Shock with Piggyback Reservoirs and Superflex Rear Coils. Plans to link the rear in the near future.

Do you think 650lb coils will be soft enough with a tube bumper, hi-lift, winch, skid plate and dual battery? I'm running Bilstein 8125's and I am buying springs for them. Torn between a 14" 650lb or 600lb

650 maybe 700.

I have 650 now. They are 5 years old and probably lost some of their spring stiffness. With my tube and winch, I have to crank them down to get the lift I want.

Also I recently went out into the desert. Maybe a new stiffer valving for all my weight. But it felt like I bottomed out too fast coming over a hill/ ledge/ jump where my front end put all its weight back on the front suspension landing. A video of the suspension working would be nice to see exactly how far everything compressed on those types of hits. (I don't thing I ever jumped it ether)

One consideration is that I have the 3rz (lighter than the 5vz), I also want decent compression in the slower stuff. I'm thinking most likely 650lb?

I need new rear springs now with all the added weight of my storage drawer system and rear swingout bumper and roof top tent

Custom Mid Travel

I thought I would provide some input here. I have had these coilovers in forever and decided it was time to get every mm of travel possible. IMG_20200517_211713.jpg

Since this is useless without documentation... here goes
IMG_20200516_232616.jpg

Coil bucket cut and CO mounted back in
IMG_20200517_211453.jpg IMG_20200517_211508.jpg

Spindle gussets welded up... I'm finally getting to be pretty consistent
IMG_20200517_180318.jpg

All done and welded up!
IMG_20200517_175832.jpg

The foam board is dimensioned and cut based on the CAD file dimensions, the final product will have internal gusseting, distributing the load all throughout the top of the coil bucket. Two 1.5" DOM tubes will come up from the frame to brace the coil bucket laterally.

Last, but not least I'll finally be using the limit straps that I've had for a few years :bounce:

Tabs and plates I will plasma cut out, and I am trying to find the best place to add tabs to the LCA for the straps. Time will tell!

Hi,
May I know who builds the 1.5" extended LCA? Do they also build the CVs and steering knuckles?
Thank you.

For mid travel, there needs to be a 1.5" or 2" extended lower control arm kit. So you would increase trac by 3" or 4". The 3.5" kit is too much for me. But a slight increase would be cool, would have the benefit of more travel, and would also provide more stability on road. Who wants to build a mid travel lower a arm kit??

Adding to this ancient thread in hopes to revive it. I think my current setup could be considered a "mild" mid travel setup, but I've been enjoying the heck out of it. 2.5 ADS coilovers up front with reservoirs, paired with SPC upper control arms and Durobump bumpstops. In the rear I have Land Cruiser 7.5 Wraps and Icon 2.5 shocks with remote reservoirs and clickers, also paired with Durobump bumpstops.
It rides incredibly well in all terrains I've given it. The rear sway bar is off (hoping to put it back on soon) but the front one is on, so I'm likely not utilizing all the travel I could. My 4Runner sees a lot of highway miles every year, so I value a comfortable ride more than optimizing flex. Anyway, I can't recommend ADS suspension enough!
