Recently ran into a strange issue with my 2016 SR5 and thought I would tell about in case anyone runs into this problem.
I purchased the vehicle used over the summer with 20,000 miles. Perfect condition, everything works great. I have done some mild off-roading requiring 4WD and recently ran it in the snow in 4WD as well.
Here in Iowa over the past few weeks it has been in the single digits and below zero multiple days in a row as well as getting some snow.
Over this past weekend I went to drop it it 4H and was presented with nothing but a flashing 4WD indicator on the dash. I then put it back into 2H and the light continued to flash. I kept driving to my destination and when I got there, turned the truck off and back on. I then again tried to put it in 4H, this time boom, it clicked on and worked great. I thought it was just a fluke and brushed it off.
The same thing then happens again the next day so I schedule an apt. at my local dealership. They spent all day trying to track down the issue with no luck so it stayed over night. They did however say it was directly linked to the cold weather; once it was in the shop it was fine, outside in the cold the issue appeared.
Got a call today saying they had figured it out. Water had somehow gotten into the front transfer case actuator and was freezing/thawing causing 4H to engage accordingly. They ordered a new actuator and will be replacing it ASAP. Service advisor said he was surprised that water was in there since they are sealed units but I guess weird things happen.
