Can someone give me some advise on the proper way to install the paper gaskets that come with the water pump and thermostat housings? I think toyota just uses the FIPG without the paper. I didn't plan on buying the toyota stuff as it's probably expensive and my crappy dealer probably would have to order it. I was just going to use the permatex stuff made for water pumps and put it on both sides of the paper to act as a bond breaker but I'm not sure if that is really what you are "supposed' to do.

You are correct, Toyota built them using only FIPG--the WP's had a groove in the flange facing to facilitate this. Several years ago (I don't know if it was while 3G's were still in production) they switched to a metal and rubber gasket and WP's with a flat flange. The Toy WP's are made by Aisin, and you can buy aftermarket OEM Aisin pumps for a pretty good price minus the red box. I bolted mine on dry, and so far so good.
I didn't use anything on the thermostat, either, other than a new gasket. The FSM doesn't call for anything. I worry about the dried goopy stuff getting into the system more than I worry about leaks if all is properly installed and torqued (14 ft-lbs. on both).

I didn't get a toyota one but it did come with gaskets and I picked up felpro gaskets too since I didn't know if it came with one or not. The directions for the pump say to use silicone on both sides of the paper gasket. There is no groove in the pump housing for FIPG. What do you guys think is the best way to go? I'm not sure what you gain with the paper gasket except it's easier to get off the next time.

My WP (no idea what brand) said to goop up both sides of the included gasket and that's what I did. My thermostat (also no idea what brand) came with a rubber gasket that needed to be replaced a week later when it leaked. I used an OEM t-stat gasket in that place. I would just suggest following the manufacturer's instructions though :cheers:
Most applications find the water pump gasket mounted on the front of the engine, with a drive pulley attached to the pump hub. Either a V-belt or a serpentine belt usually drives the pulley.
