Thinking New Tires

HI all,

My 03 Sport's shoes have seen better days.

Any advice on tires to consider? Or to avoid?

I am looking mostly for an All Terrain type around the $200 area. Long lasting, aggressive... Maybe a M/T if the price is right but I doubt it. I am considering General Grabber AT's, maybe Yokohama Geolander AT's, Firestone Destination AT etc...

I am not a fan of BF Goodrich since I have had bad luck with them in the past.

Most of my driving is on the highway but I am in the woods on dirt/logging roads maybe the occasional skid trail. Nothing too crazy...

I am open to suggestions, I figured I'd ask the experts...

I've been running the terra grapplers for about a month now.. I was between them or the grabbers.
So far they are a great tire.. Ride Quiet and great traction in the snow. I personally think it's preference and looks, I like how the grabber looks better but in the end it came down to price for me ... A local place had buy 3 get one free on the nittos so it was 160 cheaper for all 4 installed then the grabbers.. I coukdnt pass em up lol.
 
I've heard great things about the cooper at3's ... wanted them on both our 4runners when we needed new tires but they were sold out both times...

so my wife's 4runner got hankook dynapro ATM's (she loves them and I've used her 4Runner a few times and they do ride nice, on and offroad and barely look worn with 25K on them now)
my 4Runner got GY Wrangler all terrain adventure with kevlar (really like these tires through the first 5K miles...)
 
^ Great choices all around. I personally have the General Grabber AT2 and am amazed at how well it does on; the snow, ice, and mud.. Ive also had them on for a little over a year and they still really good with a TON of tread...
 
Another vote for the Cooper Discoverer A/T3. I've had them on for the past few months are they amazing. Been great in all the snow we've had, also rain. Not loud at all on the highway. I got them from Discount Tire Direct, couldn't find them cheaper locally.
 
I'm running Nokian WRG2. I just replaced the WRG2 on my wife's Land Cruiser with WRG3, and I'll do the same on my 4R next year. Best damn tire I've ever run for both heavy snow/ice, and hot-dry pavement. It is by far the best all-season in ice and snow, and is a performance-rated tire for summer use. It isn't an AT tire, but I seem to do well on muddy fire roads in the summer.

They do get very noisy as they wear. Mine are near end of life and are extremely noisy. They're good in the snow in 4WD, but in 2WD, they're to the point where they cannot get traction. I will probably be replacing them with the same tire though. I like them a lot.
 
I just went thru this challenge as well. There a quite a few good tires out there as long as you tailor them to your driving needs.

My 2008 4runner Limited had Michelin Cross Terrains on them when I purchased it at 39,000 miles and I ran them a up to 67,000. I liked the way they handled in snow (we get some of that here in northern Illinois) but were quite on the highway for summer driving.

When it came time to replace them, I intended to put on another set of Cross Terrains only to find out they were no longer made.

After quite a good amount of research, I selected the Michelin LTX M/S 2's.
They are very close to the Cross Terrains, quite on the highway and so far they have performed extremely well in snow (currently about a foot on the ground with 3-4 inches of replenishment ongoing).

They are a 70,000 mile tire, a little expensive, but I am keenly aware how important good tires are.

I am not an off roader, but find on road challenging enough some days with Chicagoland/suburban drivers!

My 2 cents worth....

How many miles have you put on them so far?

The Hankooks are a great tire for the price. We had a set on a 2002 Grand Cherokee with 70k miles on them and they still had plenty of tread left. They were starting to get a bit noisy though. Here is what they looked like right before we sold the Jeep.
 
Id say Terra Grapplers, Toyo ATII or Hankook Dynapros. Those were the three I was considering before I decided to go with the Toyo open country mt's.
 
Nitto Terra Grapplers for me on the 4WD. My friend just both a 2015 TRD Pro T4R, it came with the Nitto's too.
 
Grabber AT2's, a moutnain snowflate rated AT. Stock size. They've been fantastic in this very snow, cold winter we've had up here in New England.
