Thinking of purchasing a 2014 Trail Edition for strictly on road use

Yes on an LE -- Heated seats, dual air control, XREAS and other goodies that I don't remember because I have a Trail Edition.

The trail looks better though.

What exactly makes the limited bettered suited than the trail? The xreas? 20 inch wheel? The full time AWD?

I will be spending 99.99% of my time on the road, and looking between a trail and limited.

- I do not like the look of the limited, given the prices, looks are way high on the list of priorities.
- The trail is for the "trail", but does have great qualities for street driving, it is not like trying to drive a rock crawler cj-5 around or something.
- All the dual climate controls heated seats, etc I really do not care about. I drive something now without all of those things.

So just wondering the actual technical aspects of what makes the limited a better decision for primary street use.

A "trail" could be anyplace one finds themself exploring- so it would be up to personal likes and wants. I would say trail edition for the non-20" wheels.

That is basically my issue; while I do not explore at all now, i use to go on off to what ever fire road or whatever when I saw the need back when I did have a 4x4. I have some cuv thing now, and I think my curtailing of exploring is based on the inability to, plus living in the city it takes a bit to get out somewhere to even do so.

But it is comforting and fun knowing that while on a road trip, can just wheel off the main road to explore a little without much worry.

Are 20 inch wheels that bad? I do not like the look, but how about functionality?

Not sure why an SR5 isn't part of this discussion. I have a 2014 4x2 for strictly on road driving, and it is great for driving around town or on the road. If I lived where it snowed, I would likely opt for a 4x4 instead.

Biggest thing is full (LE) vs part time (TE) four wheel drive. Also the TE has many electronics specifically designed for heavy off road application. The LE has many more creature comforts than the TE too. Go to the Toyota website for more info. If I did not go off road much I would get a LE.

X-REAS

You don't go to Flagstaff in the winter?

Location of OP is Winnipeg. Averages about 45 inches of snow a year. I might need 4x4 capability a couple of times a year since I live in the city. But, I like having it.

I don't see where a Limited would be worth the extra money if you don't want the gadgets nor like the styling. It's your money and your vehicle, buy what you want and use it how you like. If nothing else, any "haters" who might bash you for using a trail 99.9% on road should at least appreciate that when you're done with it somebody will inherit a nice, unabused offroad vehicle at a good price.

And, as another poster mentioned, check out the SR5 for similar styling if you like the trail and would like to save even more money.

Go drive one. I haven't driven a Limited, but from the SR5 and Trail we drove, I think either will be fine on road cruisers as well.

I just picked up Trail Edition w/KDSS this morning. I plan to drive it 98% on paved roads, 1.5% on gravel roads and 0.5% on prairie trails. Can you get the KDSS package in the Limited editions? I took a tight cloverleaf off-ramp on the way home at about 50 mph and had very little body roll.

If you are going to be on pavement all the time.. and dislike the styling of the LE.. personally I would be looking at a completely different vehicle than the 4Runner.
If there is a chance of going off road.. the Trail is awesome. It behaves very well on road going from Point A to B... but, it is under powered, over weight, and doesnt get that good of MPG for the engine.
None of that swayed me from getting a TE though... YMMV

I drive my TE on the road 99% of the time. KDSS is great on the road as well as mild rutted dirt roads I rarely drive on. Its nice knowing I have the capability to go nearly anywhere if needed. No regrets on no choosing a SR5 or LE. TE forever!
