Thinking Of Selling My Dead 2000 4Runner - Need Advice Please

Hello, I've owned a 2000 4Runner for 10 years now and just recently it blew a head gasket. It was at the dealer for an oil change and check engine light when it got this diagnosis and I have been unsure as to what to do since then. We trailered it home and all I think about is selling it. The dealer gave us a cost of $3200.00 and a private mechanic gave us a cost of $1900.00; has anyone else ever had this happen and did you put the money into it to fix it? Do you think someone would buy it like this and fix it? It has been a maintenance free car since I purchased it but now this has happened. I just need some friendly advice as to what someone else would do if in this predicament.

If the rest of the truck is in good shape? I would fix it. Can you give us some more info. on it?

Hi RedSled, it has 196,000 miles on it, I've owned it since it had 127,000. It's a SR5, 4x4, black with running boards, roof rack, auto., oak leather interior. It's a sharp looking 4Runner altho' the drivers seat is cracked and split, the back bumper has rust spots and now it has the blown head gasket. I'm washing it today getting it ready for sale. I'll try and post a photo here today.

If it was me, I would do the head gasket, timing chain, water pump and drive it for another 100-200k. If you fixed it you could easily get the 1900-3200 back on top of what the asking price is for it. Those normally sell for around 6-9k where i'm located in Oregon. The one's with mechanical issues sell for about 2-4k.

Just my 2 cents.
