thinking of trading my 4runner...thoughts please

Lexus GX 460 would be the next step up from 4Runner if you love Toyota, value dependability and want a V8. My friend liked my 4Runner but wanted a V8. I referred him to a friend at Lexus and he purchased a GX 460. He loves it.

My next vehicle when I retire will be the 2009 Lexus GX470 fully loaded - same platform as my 4th Gen V8 2WD but with 4WD and more space with luxurious amenities...been seriously thinking about it.

If we spent time at 10k ft I would have rented a 4runner for a day to be sure the power was sufficient. Towing/hauling at elevation sounds like a modern diesel engine would be helpful.

Look around to see if the current Ford Ecoboost engines achieve the promised economy. Recommend the OP include the Tundra and Sequoia in the next round of shopping.

For towing I use a slightly modified Dodge Cummins. The 4runner will never have the equivalent power. The 4runner is more reliable and easier to park.

I have never understood some peoples opinion of the 4 liter 4Runner having no power,

He doesn't know how to drive in the mountains, that's the problem, not the engine...

The GX460 sucks, I was/am in the same position as the OP so I cross shopped the GX460, it falls short in everything except for a very small power to weight advantage.


4Runner - 17.79 lbs per HP, 9.6" ground clearance, 33/26 approach/departure, 17/21 mpg unleaded, 1550lb max payload, 88.8 cu.ft max cargo capacity.

GX460 - 17.05 lbs per HP, 8.1" ground clearance, 21/23 approach/departure, 15/20 mpg premium, 1470lb max payload, 81.7 cu.ft max cargo capacity.

Don't forget that god awful grill in the 460.

Buy g500, g550 or g55, new or used, up to you. All are awesome rigs, the g55 is amg w/ sc big block v8 pushing over 500hp. All have solid front axls and tripple locked. Problem solved.
