Thoughts on this 4runner

I am thinking about jumping back into the 4runner game. My last 3rd gen was totaled, and I had to use the insurance money from the truck to pay medical bills until the insurance company settled the medical portion.

I was going to get a 4th gen because I'm a big guy and as much as I loved my third gen, it was a little small (I'm 6'6"), and a little under powered compared to the options in the 4th gen.

However I was cruising around and saw this 3rd gen pop up a few miles from me. It's a 2000 with 189k miles on it, it has a branded title, looks like the rear bumper got hit. It has a claimed 'bad headgasket' per the owner and she said it was diagnosed by a shop. I went and looked at it in person before the owner got back to me, I could tell where it was from the photos. The body looks pretty straight, driver seat is ripped like normal. It has a locking rear diff button. I had a locker on my old one and loved it.

I'm thinking that worst case I can swap the engine. I haven't swapped a Toyota engine before but I've swapped an engine from a 1998 m3 into my 1990 325i, and kept it OBDII, so I can't imagine pulling and replacing the same engine would be any harder than making one fit that doesn't belong.

I also work at a import parts place that does mostly German and British, but I can get a Stone head gasket set at cost ($200) and get a discount at LKQ if I need a different engine. I would do all the work myself.

I'm thinking try and get her down in the $1500 range and go for it, I think I would need to put another $1000 or so into it and I would have a good rig. I can still pull parts off my old 4runner too as I sold it to a friend and it's sitting in his back yard.

Your thoughts are appreciated. I didn't want to run bull headed into this thing. I have a tendency to do things like that :gun6:

it's all a matter f how much work you are prepared to do. In my opinion if everything else appears to be in good shape, try to get it for around 1500. Even if you have to put a 1000 into it to get it running that's not too bad. Although the branded title kinda sucks. If you can be sure the frame is intact, 2500 for a nice Runner with a branded title wouldn't be bad at all.

The branded title is concerning. What's the reason behind that?

I really like that color combination though and almost picked one up before I found a better deal with my white/silver.

I bought a salvaged runner because the roof had damage from a fallen tree during a storm. It occasionally leaks during a HEAVY rain, but other than that it's been fine aside from getting it up to speed with maintenance. Not ALL salvaged vehicles are a waste :D good luck

Yeah, I like the color combo, I had a desert dune metallic before. I am not really worried about the branded title if it isn't frame damage or anything like that.

I was thinking $3000 for a 4runner would be bad. I pad $4800 for my last 97 limited with locking diff.

Yeah, you know it's getting to the point where I think if the frame isn't bent or anything I would just drive it into the ground. So It's not a big deal to me for resale or anything, just as long as their aren't major issues with it.

How's the rust in that area?

Rust didn't look too bad. I live in a very dry area. We don't normally have any rust. Although we are having a record snow year.

I purchased it boys. $1600 cash. The guy has owned it since 2008. Real nice guy, just doesn't have the skills to do anything with it.

I'm excited to be back in the 4runner game.

I bought mine salvaged for the same amount, the front bumper was dented but nothing major, hasn't let me down yet except for a ball joint failure but I say that's my fault for not replacing it when I knew the truck had 250k miles on the oem ones
Here's mine the day I bought it

I will admit that it being salvaged is always in the back of my head when thinking of upgrades. I haven't put any high dollar mods because of that

That's a good looking rig! I like what you've done with it. My BMW has a salvage title, so I know what you mean about the back of the mind.

Turns out this one doesn't have a damaged title, the guy just didn't now how to craigslist :bravo:

Thanks!
