yes!!! i have tripled the area and added 2 bolts, and they are bigger too. and they are zig zag to help more.

Well.... I don't know if you are concerned with rust, but the bare metal edges of the holes you drilled will rust fairly quickly. And the rust will progress from there.
More than that, the bolts through the thin sheet metal will fatigue the sheet metal. This fatigue combined with the rusting sheet metal, and the bolts will eventually pull through. This will likely happen at an inopportune time.

I do hope youre using some decently large diameter washers on the back side of the sheet metal, I've seen washer without enough surface area rip through sheet metal.

This is awesome, I have always wondered about making it work. Good job!
The thin sheet metal will still fatigue and fail with that much weight hanging off it flexing the metal constantly. It will just take a bit longer without the rust factor.
I debated about whether to reply at all. But I finally decided you might appreciate knowing that what you have there is not structurally sound for the long term.

I'm just curious...... Why do so many of you hate on Thorrider so much for? Is it cause he has skull wheels, a brush guard, and he's not as cool as the rest of you?? Is this the Girls Highschool bathroom??
Seriously? The guy is working on his own rig, doing a mod that a lot of us want to do, are too chicken $h!t to do, and all we can do is make fun of his work?
The project isn't complete, he still needs to do some finishing, and everyone keeps saying he's half a$$ing it??? He's only half done! Did anyone tell Singtoe his work on the V8 swap was horrible, because he had wiring hanging out all over in the interior?? NO! Why??? Because he wasn't finished working on it.
I choose to spend my time on this forum because there is a wealth of 4Runner knowledge here, AND.... some really awesome people to chat with. We all have had projects that didn't work out so well in the past, and none of us have has the reception that Thorrider is having. Not to mention, he still catches flack from some of you for the "Is your 4Runner Spunky?" Thread..... common! That was last year!
I'm also part of IH8MUD, Yotatech, a local off-road site called Sudbury Jeep, and another called Bay Area Wheeler's. None of these sites are as friendly, and 4Runner oriented, which is why I don't spend much time on any of them.
We all have great mods on our rigs, and Thorrider is NO EXCEPTION. He may not be the most detail oriented guy, but who cares?? He's not working on a show rig.... it's his truck! What's he use this thing for anyway?? Wheeling or going to car shows?? If it's wheeling, and I mean REAL wheeling, who cares what it looks like? As long as it works.......
Some of you have made good constructive points: Using bigger washers in the back of the quarter panel, adding some bracing, and even prettying things up a little...... But calling him an illiterate person??? How is that constructive?
Let's keep this thread clean, and give the guy some time to finish his project, before we go bashing his work??? Let's be a little courteous, and give him a break..... I think he deserves at least that??
That is all I have to say, now how do I get down from this soapbox?? lol!

ok here is the deal. im not running high tech tools here. this is what anyone could do with simple tools, thats the point. like doing the V8 swap, i mean really who is readying that saying "yes im really going to do that now" we all want to but we wont. i too dont really know why everyone hates me. i did a joke thread a year ago and everyone with a stick up there a$$ attack me. personally i dont care. there are a couple really good guys on here light fightman, and t4r4life, and gottabetrd to name a few, but so many are just lurking waiting to try to kill someone, it gets old.
when i get a 33/12.5 tire on there i will see what it does, it only has a 265/65/16. for me to reinforce it i would have to take the roll bar out and that thing is a b***h.... or would have to bust up the interior panel.
but im not sacrificing my truck. what i feel needs done will get done. it does have larger washers on the inside, and it covers a large area for support.
that said if i get is a bad enough wreck it will tear the f**k out of the side of the truck but that would be true with any truck with the carrier mounted on the side, but thats what insurance is for.
this is not a show truck by any means, it runs great and i love showing up these bigger and better trucks. but i do wax it and clean it out often and love the way the black shines when spotless, just doesnt stay like that for long. with my landcruiser crapping out this is the new play truck, and for not having any solid form of income i think its doing pretty well.

I'd say Thorrider has done a good job of making do with what he has. I honestly appreciate this kind of creative approach to problem solving. Anyone can use the "money cannon" approach (that's where you just aim the money cannon at your truck and squeeze the trigger) but coming up with a low-buck creative solution like this impresses me quite a bit.
Back in the 70's, bolt-on tire/can carriers were very common. Of course, sheet metal was thicker back then, too, because the manufacturers weren't trying to save weight for fuel economy reasons.
IIRC the Hilux Surf was available with a similar spare tire carrier and I believe there was some reinforcing of the body to support the weight of the carrier.
Thorrider seems pretty competent as a fabricator, I wonder if he could just fab up something similar? It shouldn't be that difficult to get a photo or drawing of the Hilux Surf reinforcment.

i tried that way, but the surf and the 2nd gen carriers are very different. you can look at mine and look at gottabetrd's i think. the surf wraps around the side to clear the hatch, bit the 2nd gen were made for a tailgate.

ok got it all on and cleaned up today.
put this piece and cut a section out for the latch to fit. was going to do a lot more but this was the easiest and doesnt look bad.

that point when you realize you put it all together and everything up and forgot to put the key lock back... only one word was said. and instead of using 12 washers each top bolt, had some plastic spacers that worked great.
