Thunk in rear over small bumps?

Hey All,

Annoying noise that sounds like its in the rear cargo area when I'm going over bumps. In Massachusetts this is every 20feet.

2016 Limited with 27,000 on the clock. Started 2K ago. Removed everything (loose), folded the rear seats down, winched the spare up tighter, checked the jack and tools etc. No luck. Its still there and driving me nuts!!!!

Anyone have an idea or???

I have an almost plastic or glass sounding thunk from the rear when going over bumps at low speeds, too. I suspect it's something in the rear hatch or maybe the back seat latches (that keep them upright) rattling, but haven't been able to pinpoint or rule out anything.

It's annoying, but not as annoying as the quiet and continuous vibration from the sunroof...

Try adding some electrical tape to the lift gate hook/latch on the rear bumper.

Forgive the question, but do you have a hitch installed in the receiver?

Try adding some electrical tape to the lift gate hook/latch on the rear bumper.

This did the trick for me,

but just to add-- the electrical tape doesn't go on top of the striker as you would expect, but on the rear-facing side of the loop, where the door latches.

Also the second time I added electrical tape, I noticed that the striker was loose. I used a torx bit, and tightened it down.
I was losing my mind prior to that. The rattling was driving me mad, and I stripped everything out of the cargo area.

I spend a lot of time in Mass for work; and I concur. There is an expansion joint on the highways every 20 feet. The tilt moonroof is enough to drive a person crazy

I will check that out (loose striker) and add some electrical tape. Fingers crossed!

I hear a clunk, from the rear as well, when rolling over speed bumps slightly faster than usual.

It's filthy right now, ignore the mess please. I go a little overboard with the white lithium in the wintertime.

the rear-facing surface is what the liftgate latch grabs on to. Tape goes where the pencil is pointing. Don't start with too much or your liftgate may not let go very easily when you press the button.

Thanks, I'll give that a shot today and see if it helps on my ride home. I did check the "striker", but it was not loose.

Make sure that nothing has fallen into that open space where the jack sits. There is plenty of room for stuff to fall and its almost impossible to see into the bottom of that area.

Well. Forgot to grab some tape before I left. But had some thin cardboard. Put it over the striker and.... seemed to work! Striker was tight.

Rear End Resonance Rattle at 35-40 mph

I have a 2016 Trial Premium, and there is a stretch of road on my way to work where the concrete has expansion bumps every 40'. There are perhaps 30 of them, and when I drive over this section, it sets up a rattle in the rear with each bump. I have no idea where it is coming from. It could be plastic trip, bumper, latch, suspension, etc. It is weird that I ran into this thread, because this is exactly what is happening to mine and it pisses me off. I will try the tape, and re tighten by spare, but it doesn't normally happen except when when a resonance gets going. Had a dealer tech ride with me and sure enough he heard it but had no idea where it was coming from. What is the deal, had a 2006 Sport Edition and it was solid, had, I know "God Forbid", a 2016 Xterra that always felt like I was driving in a closet but that thing was rock solid going over any potholed or bumps. I love my 4Runner but come on Toyota at 37K miles Toyota tighten your assembly up so your customers are delighted, not frustrated to drive their vehicles. Of course the dealer thinks I'm a nut, and by the way at the dealerships your service advisor that checks you in, knows nothing about vehicles, always talk to a tech. In addition, Toyota Certified Used has no meaning anymore, except that they will pay the cost of repairs for 6 X 60.
