Thunk in rear over small bumps?

I have a 2019 TRD Pro w/ 5k miles and I get a weird thunk/rattle from the rear. I have Rago panels and the shelf so I thought that might be it but I think it could be just the stuff attached to it that are making the noise when going over bumps. Will try to take everything off the panels and add electrical tape.

I'll give the hatch latch tape trick a try too. i have an irregular noise going over slight bumps which i still think is coming from the wheel well on the drivers rear side. guess ill check my spare, too. cant imagine what the hell it is.

Just a thought, right after I bought mine back in 2012 I noticed the rea liftgate handle was loose. I removed the liftgate inside trim, pulled back the plastic, and tightened the handle and the 4runner badge. Could it be that rattling and knocking? A cracked or worn sway bar bushing will knock as well.

Definitely not the jack for me as I've had that removed since day 1 (got paranoid after seeing a 4runner have the rear window smashed and they used the jack to lift the truck to steal the tires). I added some tape but still seems to be there. I'm going to try taking off the striker plate and reversing it like I saw in another thread.

It's filthy right now, ignore the mess please. I go a little overboard with the white lithium in the wintertime.

the rear-facing surface is what the liftgate latch grabs on to. Tape goes where the pencil is pointing. Don't start with too much or your liftgate may not let go very easily when you press the button.

I have a 2016 Trial Premium, and there is a stretch of road on my way to work where the concrete has expansion bumps every 40'. There are perhaps 30 of them, and when I drive over this section, it sets up a rattle in the rear with each bump. I have no idea where it is coming from. It could be plastic trip, bumper, latch, suspension, etc. It is weird that I ran into this thread, because this is exactly what is happening to mine and it pisses me off. I will try the tape, and re tighten by spare, but it doesn't normally happen except when when a resonance gets going. Had a dealer tech ride with me and sure enough he heard it but had no idea where it was coming from. What is the deal, had a 2006 Sport Edition and it was solid, had, I know "God Forbid", a 2016 Xterra that always felt like I was driving in a closet but that thing was rock solid going over any potholed or bumps. I love my 4Runner but come on Toyota at 37K miles Toyota tighten your assembly up so your customers are delighted, not frustrated to drive their vehicles. Of course the dealer thinks I'm a nut, and by the way at the dealerships your service advisor that checks you in, knows nothing about vehicles, always talk to a tech. In addition, Toyota Certified Used has no meaning anymore, except that they will pay the cost of repairs for 6 X 60.

I've had similar noises. Adjusting the gate striker forward eliminated the noise. Try hitting the striker with a hammer without backing off the bolts. Usually two good taps will make a noticeable difference. I've also had nuts back off the gate trim, they end up rolling around and rattling when opening and closing the gate. Easy to see when the speakers are removed.
