Tic Tic Tic Sound - PCV Valve?

2004 V6 SR5 4x4

So after reading a thread or two about some noise under the hood that makes a similar sounds, which is actually kinda hard to head unless u got the hood open or you are driving next to a wall...

Seems like an inexpensive thing just to swap out...

Can anyone educate me as to what this thing actually does?

Does my diagnosis sound like its on point?

It's a one way valve that vents the crankcase fumes back into the intake to get burned off. Emissions item. Owners with turbo cars or cars with lots of oil blow by will install a catch can inbetween rather than to have the oil burned off back through the intake.

Pop it out and give it a shake. If it rattles, it's still good.
It's also one of the few things I go OEM with instead of aftermarket. Aftermarket ones don't seem to function too well.

I figure if I am going to pull it out just to test, I might as well replace it. OEM the part seems to be < $10

That said, I am getting a bit of a ticking noise... somewhere I read it could be the PCV.

Perhaps I will record it, and post it up here for review...

Am I looking at the right thing here, 20 ft/lb torque value?

Yes 27 Nm = 20 ft-lbs torque. Unless noted otherwise (like some parts in your diagram), Toyota lists torque in the following manner: Nm (kg-cm, ft-lb).

I've read that the ticking sound you hear from the 1GR-FE engine is actually the injectors, and there's not really anything you can, or need to, do about it.

May not be correct, but I'm approaching 170,000 miles with mine making that noise and it hasn't been a problem yet.

I have the same noise. While it drives me absolutely insane, I can't tell that it's causing any problems. I'm curious to see if a new valve fixes your problem.

I dont know how I got that mixed up with the PCV, but I think I saw a thread on a bad PCV which allowed moisture to collect in the heads and the oil started to "milkshake" because of it.

The Normal tick sound of the v8 is the injectors functioning as designed, it does it brand new.

another tick sound is an exhaust leak which is common on v8's.

cleaned my pcv valve today, was swapping one of the coils in my effort to troubleshoot a persistent p0174 code, and my research somewhat brought me to pcv valves, i decided to remove mine and inspect. appeared ok at first, had a slight rattle, and i felt it was ok, decidedto blow through the wrong end, and air passed me, got me confused, since i thought the pcv valve is a 1 way valve, i decided to clean it further with carb cleaner, and blew through it occasionally. the more i cleaned, the more the rattling noise increased when i shook it, and the more it resisted my blowing through it. i cleaned it till i couldnt blow through it again.

so i can dedue that blowing through it - the wrong way is the best way to test if the pcv valve is working or not, the rattle test alone isnt fool proof!

Yes. It is a check valve of sorts. Should be very little to no air flow blowing thru the wrong way.
