Ticking is driving me crazy...

This tick has been around awhile. I've had other things to tend to, but now it's time to tackle this thing! It gets worse under engine LOAD, not necessarily RPM, and can be produced on command by lightly touching the accelerator while climbing a hill. Seems to quiet down under cruising/steady state driving. Any thoughts are greatly appreciated! My thought is valve chatter, but I'd like some input. Thanks! [emoji106]

If it's coming from the back, it's probably the fuel pressure regulator. Completely harmless but annoying. It's on the fuel rails on the back on the engine. Tried to find a photo of where it is but couldn't and my engine is not stock anymore.

Take a length of hose about 3 feet or so long. Put one end up to your ear and the other end near the fuel pressure regulator. You'll hear the noise if that's it. If not, try near each cylinder on the valve cover.

I took an extension and put it on where the bottom of the manifold attaches to the top of the engine, but I could have been picking up some noise from that. I will definitely check that out. Thank you!

Just for reference it looks like this:

Except some of that is in hoses and such, just look for the disc-like top.

Thank you! I put the hose on the end of it, and there it was. [emoji1] Is there a way to disable/isolate it so that I can be completely sure that's what it is? Can it get loud enough to hear accelerating down the highway?

I always thought the injectors ticked. Not the FPR. This is how you test for a dead injector, listening to them.

Does anyone know of a good way to get to the driver side injectors without taking the intake manifold off?

It's a pretty substantial tick, especially under acceleration. I could be hearing two different things, but it's just hard to tell.

The intake manifold is under the fuel rail. It's the intake plenums that are blocking access to the driver's side injectors. I don't know of any way to access them without taking both plenums off. I'd be surprised if there is a trick to doing it with the lower plenum still on.

If it were the injectors, he would not hear it under load. At idle you might be able to pick out an individual injector but not when the RPM's increase. It would just be a constant buzzing noise!

5vzfe are just know for ticking noise. It's actually normal.

Yes, that is true. Toyota FPR's are known to get loud. Anyone who's owned a 3VZ-E engine knows this to be too true. His is exceptionally loud though, you're not normally supposed to hear it from inside.

Just take off the plenums. Its actually pretty easy, just a few bolts and vacuum lines.
Just be VERY CAREFUL when messing with the fuel rail. I broke off an injector and it fell into the valves. Had to remove the valve covers and manifold to fish it out with needlenose pliars.

Thank you guys for all the helpful comments. With the info y'all have provided, I now think I have two unrelated issues: the FPR tick, which I didn't know was so common on the 5VZ-FE, and an exhaust leak. I originally thought my only-under-engine-load noise was an exhaust leak, but shot the idea down because a shop I trust told me there wasn't an exhaust leak. It just seems too much like one though: if I barely touch the throttle, I get a wispy ticking noise. What do you giys think? I've already replaced literally every gasket except the one against the driver's side manifold, which is where the sound seems to be coming from, and I just really don't want to take that darn crossover pipe off again! Interesting. I hear it inside in winter only. But 30k miles and no issues knock on wood. I really think sometimes over thinking it can make you lose sleep. I was searching all over Internet even bugging me mechanic friend. Just ended up telling my self. It's Toyota ticking noise.

Op of you find the issue let us know

I think the question is, does a ticking FPR mean anything? On my Pickup it ticked SO loud, but I just learned to live with it and never had any fuel issues. Plus it was about $100 to replace so I figured it wasn't worth it.

Even my current 4Runner ticks, but only when I have the hood up can I hear it. The supercharger is too loud and drowns everything else out...
