Ticking sound coming from engine

I have a 98 4runner with 190,000 miles on it. I bought it at 150,000 miles and there was a small ticking sound in the engine but it would go away when i gave it gas. Well this morning I noticed it was louder and didnt go away when i gave it gas. So i shut it off then started it up and the noise didnt start right away, it took 30 secs. All right the questions?
1. It was cold today so would that be the reason?
2. Should I take it to the shop to get serviced?
3. Or am I just paranoid
The engine has been well taken care off, oil change every couple thousand miles, seafoam

Its coming from the drivers side of the engine. Is it hard to adjust the vavles yourself or should I have a shop do it. and I've heard that alittle ticking is nothing to worry about.

Start the car open the hood stand just in front of the drivers door and stick your head next to the cowl and fender. There's a vacuum line w/a check valve that ticks when cold sometimes. U will see a black box w/some vacuum lines plugged into it in front of the brake boost? Is this where the noise is coming from or the engine?

was just wondering if its a 2.7l or the v6 because its well documented that in colder temps the 2.7l ticks,im sure not all but if you go over to the taco forum the 2.7 is used more in the taco and people have had youre so called "ticking issue" in colder temps and have never had an issue. My 2.7 does it but only in cold temps and for the first 15 seconds then goes away. :happens:

The noise is coming from the black box on the fender. I can feel the tick thru the line going into it. So is there a way to fix that or is that normal?

Good news is it's not the engine, one of the techs at the dealer that I work at (Toyota) told me not to worry about it it's normal. I wanted the noise gone to, he says don't worry about it the noise is the part doing what is supposed to do.
