Time for Maintenance/Mods 2000 2wd 4Runner

Hello everyone. This is going to be my 1st official post as a 3rd Gen owner. YAY! I've had my 2000 4runner SR5 2wd for going on 2 years now, and with 190,000 miles it is time for me to do some maintenance, modifications, resto work to it.

I'm hoping with some guidance I can have a fun reliable vehicle that I will continue to love, and hopefully persuade me not to put a down payment on something new that I do not NEED at this time. So bear with me, as this will have both my well thought out input, as well as some questions that hopefully the more experienced here can answer.

So to start off, I do have a 2wd. I have followed the 12 step program in accepting this, and I understand that I will not be wheeling this vehicle. However, that does not stop me from modding, and enjoying my truck. I will spend 99% of my time on road, commuting to school/work, and 50% of the time I will most likely have my little boy with me. Safety is a concern.

With that out of the way, I want something that I enjoy stepping outside and looking at, just as much as I enjoy driving. So what follows will be my list of what I want done/what needs to be done, as well as my list of possible upgrades that could happen.

Maintainence that is up to date.
-Timing Belt, Water Pump, Pulleys all at the same time
-New Spark Plus
-New Oil Pump (Discovered a thread insert from the previous owner during installation of hydraulic tensioner)
-New Radiator
-Upgraded Head Unit

Maintainence to do, in no particular order
-Tires (These will come first, as the set I am currently running as on their last leg)
-Lower Ball Joints (To my knowledge, and prior records, these have never been addressed)
-Tie Rods Inner/Outer (Once again, never been addressed to my knowledge)
-Shock/Struts (This will also be noted in the upgrades/mods area)
-Brakes (Death Wobble)
-Antenna (Failed OEM unit, not a large concern thanks to Pandora)
-Air Filter

Upgrades, Here comes the Fun Stuff
-Larger Tires (Something in the 265/75r16 family)
-New Wheels (A nice looking set of 16's would make me a happy man)
-Tundra Brake Upgrade (If finances allow)
-Shocks/Struts (A small lift with a set of Bilstein's would be awesome. I will have questions concerning this)
-Some variation of a Scan Gauge (I come from the mustang world, and I self tune my '94 so I like to see whats going on)

Lotto Win Upgrades
-Supercharger (Everyone wants one, so why can't I want one as well)
-4WD/Manual Swap (I want it. I know it has been done. If I do it, it will be seamless)

I realize these lists are not huge, as I do not have huge expectations. I am capable of doing all the work myself, minus tires/alignment. There is some potential this could turn into a mini build thread, but I'm sure not many folks would care to see much 2wd stuff.

So, onward with what I could use some help with.

1. Shocks/Struts - I am leaning towards the TRD/Bilstein lift. I could use new shocks and struts anyways, so why not go ahead and lift it a bit.
I am curious though, about using stock Tundra Bilstein take off coilover assemblies. I realize these do not come with the 5100's,
however, the cost for both front units (Springs and Struts complete) is roughly the same as replacement OEM springs. Would this be a viable
option for the front, or will I be left wanting more from the struts? Also, what sort of rear setup would complement this? I would like to have
as little rake as possible, and want ride quality as comfortable as can be (Recall I am transporting a wife an child often).

2. Front End Maintenance - I want to verify I replace things in the correct order. I currently have a high speed shake, that occurs between 65-73.
I want to cover my butt, and do the ball joints and tie rods as preventative maintenance. I feel I should do these the same time I do the shocks/struts
so that way I can align it once and be done. Would that assumption be correct?

3. Strange CEL situation - I have an intermittent CEL (P0705 I believe is the code) that appears to be related to the PRNDL sensor. It only occurs on occasion, but on such instances, if I hit my Hi-Beams
it will kick my down into first until I turn off my Hi's and shift out of drive to neutral, then back to drive. I have read that this could be related to a printed
circuit board on the gauge cluster. It's not a huge concern, as I rarely use my Hi's, but it is still annoying regardless.

I will continue to add on to this as needed. In the mean time, everyone please feel free to suggest alternate means, or answer whatever questions possible.

Thank you to everyone for everything ahead of time! I will have pictures up shortly.

That is quite a bit to digest in one post.

I have never seen a insert in an oil pump in any car or truck in 22 years. I am thinking a tap and die would have been the way to go. Glad it was fixed.

By this time in a 3rd gen's life, the more front end components to be replaced, the better. Always replace in pairs. Steering rack bushings, brakes, and sway bar bushings come to mind.

Never have seen a PO705 on a 3rd gen. Check your grounds to make sure all are tight. The tranny kicks down into first gear when the high beams are engaged, but when you turn them off does the tranny upshift to the correct gear?

Caesar, it doesn't not shift out to the correct gear unless I take it out of drive, and place it back into drive. And as I mentioned, its completely intermittent. Oh and the reverse indicator on the dash will stay lit at all times when this occurs, no matter what gear its placed in.

Helicoil would most likely be a better description on the pump situation, my apologies. Either that, or I had a bad day wrenching (it happens), and overtightened the bolt. Aluminum oil pump and too much torque on hydraulic tensioner stripped it out. Either way, it has a fresh oiling system so that's never a negative thing.

Looks pretty much identical to my list.

I have a little wobble in steering wheel at hwy speeds and a pull to the left even after an alignment. Is that attributable to brakes?

I'm curious about that myself. I'm pulling down the front tonight to do a parts check and see what all needs to be done. The local pullapart has a tundra so I'm gonna go check for brakes.

Back to the trouble code. I caught 2 instances this morning, where the reverse light stays illuminated. Two separate pictures, one from before I dropped off my little boy and one after. You can't see it, but in the first picture the Check Engine is not lit. uploadfromtaptalk1440586702548.jpguploadfromtaptalk1440586714871.jpg

So I was incorrect about the code. The actual code is P1780 Park Neutral Position Switch Fault. I have tracked it down to a short in the printed circuit board on the instrument cluster. At least I know what it is now, and if anyone has this code appear feel free to ask questions.

The "D" on my '02 runner stopped lighting up a while ago but I never thought much of it. Could it be from something similar?
