I cannot stress enough (and I'm sure most of you already know this) how well these things handle the snow, and a lot of it. We've been getting hammered with snow for about a week now. I was finally able to test my new-to-me 4Runner, and I'm very happy for the most part.
With the diff locked, I have almost no gripes whatsoever, since the truck almost always grips up right away without losing traction (Duratracs don't hurt). The biggest issue for me is when I'm in two-wheel only, or part-time 4WD, and come across some slippery stuff when I'm trying to accelerate from a dead stop. I could not believe how much power was cut and how quickly it happened. I understand the point of the system, and it works how its supposed to, but it is not conducive to getting anywhere. Quite often, when there are breaks in the snow falling, many roads end up wet. I end up in two-wheel or part-time, and then come across a minimal incline or even a flat surface that stops me dead when I come hit the occasional snowy spot.
When I read about the AndyMod, I decided ill give it a shot. Even with the diff locked, sometimes you need to get those wheels spinning. Again, I'm sure most of you are more than aware. The biggest issue is just simply trying to pull out into traffic and running across even the smallest slippery spot and bogging down.
I've ordered the fog switch (PT297-89013 sw), and I'll be getting the mod done as soon as it arrives and I have the time to do so. The only thing I don't like is having to turn the truck off and back on again to reengage the system, but thats a minor inconvenience compared to the problem at hand.
Having said all of that, Ill take some pics as I'm doing it and do a small write up if anyone is interested. I know its been don't before, but sometimes a different perspective/set of pictures can help out someone thinking about doing it. As a side note, I can watch my fuel gauge drop as I drive with the diff locked. Its actually comical how bad it is, but its worth it. For those who actually read this, thanks! Just wanted to share the experience.
