Timing Belt Finally Done!

So I haven't gotten this deep in to a vehicle in a long time. Needless to say, it was a very long day.

Started at about 10:00 am, finished up about 10 hours later. For my first time I'd say it was decent.

I did:
- Timing Belt
- Idler Bearing
- Water Pump
- Hydraulic Tensioner
- Upper & Lower Rad Hoses
- Three New Accessory Belts

I did pull the rad for additional room so the drain, removal, re-install and fill likely added an additional 1.5 hours total (I took my time).

The good part: Everything lined up and was good to go on the first shot.

The bad parts: Even with boxing things, I still lost hardware. I lost two fan shroud bolts and four timing cover bolts. The strangest thing.
I broke the hydraulic tensioner pin trying to remove it. I did not have the SST so ended up improvising to get some pressure on it. I would not do that again.
I discovered that the previous person to work on this truck had forgotten to re-attach the alternator tensioner bolt (explains my random low voltages sometimes) and left the rear AC compressor bolt undone.

I did discover that the truck had previously had at least a water pump (it was a GMB) but couldn't verify the other components. I had a very noisy idler bearing and no proof of the work being done so this is why I ended up digging in.

What would I do differently? I would have invested the $30 in the tensioner SST, bought a spare rad (I thought about it but didn't) and also picked up a transmission cooler.

That's about it! Roughly 10 hours from start to finish with a few hiccups along the way! Glad it's out of the way!

First Start - Post Timing Belt!

I bought the tensioner tool, never used it on my TB change, but have used it for many other things. Worth the money, unlike that GMB water pump.

Congrats on a job well done.

Nice work, give yourself a pat on the back. Timing belt is an intimidating job for most people. I've done 2 on these motors now, definitively one of the easiest I've done!

The most embarrassing part about that was that I had to actually look up who the company was - I had never heard of them. Why is it embarrassing? Well I'm a Journeyman Partsman with enough experience that I was on the counter at a Toyota dealer when the 5VZ was still new...

I still have an pulley squeal somewhere in there so I'll have to get back in to it again at some point but at least I know the process. It's really not a tough engine to work on!

GMB used to manufacture decent aftermarket pumps. Now, not so much. The last two GMB water pumps I dealt with had smaller than original impellers and the weep hole on one was shut tight with casing slag.
