Timing belt replacement - how to clean pulleys?

Ok, I'll admit it, I messed up. While cleaning the gunk around I somehow ended up with a bunch of oil and dirt on my camshaft pulley. The crankshaft pulley also ended up with some grime on it too.

The factory manual says to not use cleaning products on them and just wipe them clean with a cloth. But this just smeared the oil some more.

Can I use brake cleaner on them or just continue wiping with clean rags until they are sparkling?

The cam pulleys are made from metal, brake cleaner isn't going to hurt them.

03 is non-VVTI. I think with VVTI, you'd want to be more careful but in our case, you are fine.
