Tiny hole in muffler and fuel filter question.

Two parter here;

Finally replaced my fuel filter. Went to start it and fuel sprayed everywhere. Went back down and tightened up the fittings more. The back one is dry now but the front one has a tiny leak still. I can't figure out why I can't get it tighter. Thoughts?

Also, I noticed a tiny couple mm sized hole in the bottom of the muffler. What can I use to seal that? Probably the size of a pebble and some liquid comes out of it when I start the car. Don't have access to a welder.

Seems similar to my predicament. I'm going to try and re-do the front with the proper tool (flare nut wrench). I'm going to check the threads and then check the flare itself I guess (which I'm not clear on, but it's the flared part of the fuel line inside the compression fitting?)?

It's also possible that I got a bad filter from the dealership too from what I hear.

Still open to ideas though!

possible you got a bad filter.
Just out of curiousity on your choice of wrench? why not use an open end wrench that would fit?
i used an open end wrench to hold that and another wrench to tighten the flared nut insert if that makes sense.

Sounds like Permatex might be my answer. The hole is like the size of a bb or pellet, so shouldn't be the end of the world to dab something on there to seal it?

Yeah, I don't have a 19mm open ended wrench anymore. Must have lost it back when I used to still lend out my tools. Lessons learned!

I'll pick one up when I go get a flarenut wrench tomorrow while I'm at it.

So much for a half hour job!

Edited: I couldn't stand it so I went back out to get the flare nut wrenches tonight. Sure enough, I got another 7th of a turn out of it with the right wrench and voila, no more leak (I think). Hopefully it stays that way!

I will say, the old filter was naaaasty brown. While I was under there I noticed quite a few things leaking, so I just added the following to my list:

-Drop transmission pan, reseal with FIPG, and retap the drain plug threads (long story)
-Looks like where the transfer case connects to the rear drive shaft is leaking too, so probably another gasket. I did the front version of that gasket a couple years back and it wasn't too bad.

Does that hole look like rust? I bet not. Lots of mufflers DO have small hole to let that condensation out.

Those flare's like to leak a TINY bit if you don't really crank them down. I loosened and reset mine like 5 times before it stopped leaking. I just kept the fuel filter loose, meaning out of the holder in my hand, so I could thread the fitting all the way in by hand. This ensures it is seated properly and your not crooked and ruining the flare at the end of the hard line.

Sounds like you figured that much out already, but for anyone else who may see this one day..

It looks like a tiny rock flew into it. It wasn't there the last time I was under my truck, but I'll take a pic later and get some input just in case.

Yeah, the back one was easy enough to thread by hand and then tighten the last few turns with an open ended wrench.

I'm guessing I cross threaded the front one. I recall it needing to be wrenched a lot earlier than the back one. Ah well, leak is done. I'll keep an eye on it and replace it if needed.

Hopefully someone else doesn't make this mistake!
