I have a 2000 4runner and she needs new tires soon. Right now I have BFGoodrich Mud-terrain T/A KM 255/75/17 and they are too skinny and loud on the road. I mainly go on the road but I plan to start taking her on dirt once I get a new set of tires. My problem is most tires are too skinny and I don't think they look good on her. Any thoughts on sizes/ brands/ types etc.?

Most people go with the 265/75/16 or 285/75/16 (or their equivalent on the 17" rim; I'm not familiar with those sizes). That's basically a 32x10.5 and a 33x11 (ish). They're way fatter than the 255 and both look great, with my personal favorite being the 285.
For brands, my research has told me that the BFG A/T KO and the Goodyear Wrangler Duratracs are pretty much the top picks for all terrain; although perhaps not everyone's favorites, they're probably the most popular. The Duratracs are (in my research) a little bit better, but a little bit more expensive, and the BFGs have a bit longer of a life.
For muds, I'd say go with the KM2, but with any mud you'll have the same issue with them being loud and not great on the road, but they're great if you like mud and mud-like terrains.

If you want a tire that's essentially the same height, but a bit wider, the 265/70R 17 size might be what you are looking for.
Tires are all about compromise. Loud, quiet. Mild tread, aggressive tread. Soft ride or harsh ride. The question is which compromises can you live with. Brand preference is all subjective too. I've had good luck with BFG, Michelin, Toyo, Yokohama, Bridgestone, and a few others.
From high performance car tires, to truck tires, I've never owned a Goodyear tire that I liked.
Others speak highly of Goodyear.
I would say read as many reviews as you can about any tire you're considering, then go from there.

I'm definately not going muds again. That SUPER thick tread isn't what I'm looking for and they just came with the car when I first got her.

Well theres your problem! muds really don't do well under a CAR!:whipping2
Like I said, I didn't choose them. They came with her when I got her and I decided to ware down the tread before I got a new set.

If you're wantin to stick to ATs, I'll throw in the Falken Rocky Mountains. A few of us run them and no complaints so far. They are D load, so not too stiff, have an aggressive look, are extremely quiet, 50k warranty, and are around $170 each (285 75 16s) at Discount Tire Direct.

I second this. The Falken Rocky Mountain ATs arr GREAT! I recently put them on my 4runner, there is hardly any road noise and they look awesome. Check out my build thread for pics.
I just got a set of Cooper Discoverer ATP, in the 265/75 R16 size. Price was $160 / tire at 55k mile warranty. Ride nice and smooth, a lot quieter than the tires they replaced. They also do pretty well in the snow. Only have a couple hundred miles on them but I am liking them.
