Tire recommendations?

For a V8 4WD '2008 Limited. I don't want to buy new wheels, and I don't have a lift. Looking for tires that will offer good off-road performance and capability without ruining on-road driving performance. I can tolerate some increased noise on the highway, but they shouldn't be really loud.

I have the stock Hancock tires. They did fine for most of the off-roading last weekend, but definitely slid around a little on some of the more moderately difficult trails.

From first hand experience:
I'd recommend the BFG Rugged Terrain or the Toyo OC ATII, which is a little more aggressive. I haven't had any complaint from either tire on or offroad.

From what I've seen on here:
Cooper Discoverer AT3
Hankook Dynapro ATM
BFG KO2

They all seem to fit the bill of being good on and off road.
 
If you drive in any areas that require severe snow rated tires or chains, check out grabber at2s or bfg ats.

Tirebuyer has the generals pretty cheap. $40 off coupon on the home page.

I have the at2s and they have been great, especially for the price. I was going to get at3s, but they are not severe snow rated.
 
Another thumbs up for Cooper AT3s.
I put these to a test on a ice/snow covered pavement hill and not a shred of hesitation by the tires. A local laughed at me, thinking there was no way I was getting up that hill… showed him wrong.

Also, I didn't noticed ANY additional on-road noise from these tires.

Unless you going mudding or crawling I can imagine this tire is just fine for most people going down dirt/logging trails. Just my $0.02
 
The Michelin LTX AT2 is an excellent all terrain tire with excellent road manners. Go,get them at Costco. You won't regret it.

Perhaps not if it's anything like the factory-issued Hancooks, which let's just say my local Toyota dealer was shocked to see I took off-road---and even more shocked that it performed as well as it did! It didn't struggle at all down logging trails and dirt roads, but there's a BIG range of conditions to be found between that, and crawling and mudding. I'm not a rock crawler or mudder. I'm not experienced enough to do it yet, and my truck is definitely not rigged for it. Hell I still have my running boards on there. And that was a problem even on some really light duty trails.

Not all dirt roads are the same. Where the Hancooks struggled were on the dirt roads with deep ruts running through them, especially the narrow roads where you couldn't straddle the ruts and had to find a way to maneuver through, over, or around them without the tires sliding into them. These were dirt roads at the state Cow Mountain OHV state park in NorCal. Here's an example. It's not the best example since this road was wide enough that I had no problem getting around and over the ruts you see in it, but it's just an example. The factory, highway-rated tires were not aggressive enough to handle these types of conditions. They did...ok...with some careful maneuvering but I'd certainly prefer to have tires that wouldn't really struggle over relatively minor road conditions. Problem on the narrower roads was that my factories would slip/slide in and out of the ruts.

In prior adventures, my factories have also struggled in even light amounts of dry sand. Does better in 4L, obviously, but not a tire I'd want to have there again.

I don't know if I'd wait. As posted above, discount tire direct's ebay store has a great deal going at the moment. You can get $100 off, free shipping, and I think cooper is still offering a rebate (maybe not, can't remember). I think that deal ends tomorrow.

Another data point that maybe helpful but it's unverified by me, so take it for what it's worth. I was talking to a fella with a '04 V8 earlier today, as we were swapping our hoods, about tires. He is currently running BFG AT KO (not KO2) LT265 70 17 and he is complaining of fuel mileage loss (predictable) and how noisy there are. My experience with these tires were quite the opposite and they were LT285 75R16s, but they were on a '97 FZJ80 Landcruiser with front solid axle.

He also said that he had a set of Cooper AT/3s and thought they became noisier over time as well. Noise level is purely subjective as we all know but I found this tidbit of info interesting, none the less.
