First of all I'm a Limited owner so not into Off Roading although I still find myself needing 4WD now and again as a bird hunting guide.

I just picked up a nail in my side wall.
I have 50K miles on my tires but still decent tread.

The school of thought has always been, buy at least 2 tires with radials.
Imagine rags aren't even made anymore.

Should I buy 4, because? ... why not?

Then what.

I'm impressed with tread life of the originals, but I also know assembly plants get the best tires.

If you are asking what to buy, I recommend Michelin Defender LTX. Solid on highway tire and performs pretty well off road too according to videos. I don't off road so all I can comment on is highway ... very smooth, no balance problems, life is decent, good in the wet and snow.
 
With the AWD on the limited I would replace all 4. Awd is more sensitive to different tire heights than part time 4wd. I have the cooper at3 on my limited but I have 17” wheels.

^This. I like Goodyear Duratracs on my 4runner, jeep gc, and Ram 2500. If they’re too aggressive for what you want, I had Nitto Terra Grapplers on my jeep grand Cherokee and they were like glue on rainy asphalt. Might be good for muddy duck or pheasant fields. The Duratracs are better in mud, but not asphalt.
 
Lucky to get 60K miles on a set of tires, so at 50K I'd replace all 4. If you want to go cheap, uninstall the spare from its steel wheel and install it on the rim opposite the new one replacing the tire with the nail in the side wall. Put an old tire on the steel wheel spare. But plan on replacing the other 2 worn tires in 10K miles.
 
Agree with either Coopers or Michelins. Only have experience with the LTX, they were really good in all conditions except deep mud. Plus they lasted fir a TON of miles--got over 100k on a Wrangler and over 80k on a Grand Cherokee.

Big thanks on reminding me I have AWD and need to consider that thing.

I'm a torque nerd, and nobody addressed that.
Just re-torqued the wheel lugs.

Going by feel when loosening, things were +- 40%

For fun I thought about using my rotary transducer tied to my android app against my click wrench.

Didn't have the time.
 
I just went through the same thing, and am the same - Not serious offroader, but do camp/hunt/fish in all seasons and weather. I had the Defender LTX on my 2014. They were great tires and I was seriously considering buying them again. I also considered replacing rims too to open more options. That said, I actually like the Limited rims and also didn't want the additional investment after a new vehicle.

With the new one I decided to try the Toyo AT3 as I wanted more of an AT tire. They've only been on a couple days, but they seem to ride well and I do like the look of them.

We put a set of Bridgestone weatherpeaks on our Subaru and so far have really enjoyed them in the summer weather and rain. We haven’t tested them on the snow, but they have pretty aggressive sipes and tread pattern. Might be worth checking out if they come in your size.
 
most cases, you can even go yellow. very minimal mods to fit. high caster and heat gun the fender liner and push it forward. I went green first time around, ended up going bigger.
I've read it somewhere here. Go Big or Go Home. Buy once, Cry once.

Thank you. I've also read its sometimes just the fender liner. I would go that route but this was really bad timing.

I went with 20" Toyo ATlll. After 45 miles it seems like they have potential. Not many AT's in 20". Wasn't afraid of spending another chunk for smaller wheels but gee wiz I hate most of the designs and hundreds to choose from with just 1 brand. Not into flashy. Lord!!

Anyway, the shop filled these to 44psi according to my tpms.
I'm thinking this is a tad high but can't find here or other searches what or if there should be higher pressures for these vs OEM.
 
I’ve read good things about those Defender LTX tires but they sure fail in the looks department. The tread pattern looks like something from my grandma’s Buick .

Run the standard pressure that’s on the door jamb. No need to deviate from that at stock size, unless it’s a higher load range, which I don’t think is even available at this size.

I'll always point people in the direction of the Falken Wildpeak AT3W now. I've had 285/70-17 E-load for 63k miles. As far as wear, they look like they only have a fraction of that mileage.
They're quiet on the road and I've never been stuck in mud, sand, or snow.

That's why they are so quiet, fuel efficient and have great road manners.

Michelin is a French owned company but have manufacturing in many countries, tires bought in US come either from US, Canada, or Mexico. With that said, I just checked my right front and it was made in Thailand! So, I guess they could come from any of their factories!
