OP, don’t waste your money on an expensive rack, contact Joe at Outgear Solutions instead. They make top quality racks and they look almost identical to Gobi at nearly half the price.

This does not surprise me. Another victim of a cease and desist letter no doubt. I went to his website at your suggestion and while I could see one single picture of a 4Runner with an 'expedition style rack', I did not see it in their Products link.

Laugh it up. It’s a sport I take seriously, and I’m in the trails almost every weekend. It’s one thing I enjoy doing, and have been doing since I was 13. I’m a cheap bastard normally, but when it comes to bikes, I don’t compromise. I’m the same with all my kids bikes as well.

I'm also an avid mountain biker. Been mountain biking since 1985. The last bike i built would have retailed for $7k. Modding a truck can cost a ton of money. I bet if people added up what all the mods have cost them, they would be pretty shocked. For me, I knew the only reason I would do expensive mods was if I was planning on really using it for what I was building it for. Those that put thousands into suspension, bumpers, winch, skids, snorkel, etc just so they can cruise the mall don't make sense to me. But, to each his own, I reckon. If they want to perform Sic Mods so they can negotiate the speed bumps at the mall, who am I to judge.

So, someone like Ash who wheels his rig sees the benefit of having a very functional and strong roof rack. When I was recently in Death Valley 4wheeling, one of the cool things I did with my Gobi style rack is stand up on top and get a better view point of the landscape. I was able to spot a trio of wild burros which was pretty cool.

This is so true. Than you got cheap asses like me. Have less than $1500 in my lift. $750 bumper and $350 winch. It wheels along side LT rigs, SAS rigs, icon, king, fox lifted. You dont need $10k into a lift for it to perform. Kind of like my $200 mountain bike.

For family guys it is all about choices and resourcefulness and I admire that in a person so let's not call it cheap ass. I am the same way and you probably wheel harder then some who have spent a lot. For me, often it's not about money but satisfaction of creating a project with value. I am pretty positiveI think I've seen a video of your rig rock crawling on China man gulch.

Not dogging. Simply expressing my opinion, since the OP posted here soliciting opinions, and he got a lot of them in varying degrees. I don’t know the extent of his use with his truck, therefore I don’t know what would suit him. For me, and what I do with my truck it would simply be ridiculous to drop $1,600. But I’m basing my opinion on what I do with my truck. Obviously his truck see heavier duty use, so it could be a good investment.

I should have caught that in your screen name that you’re a fellow MTBer. The bikes do get expensive as you swap parts out on it and upgrade drive components and such. I’m starting to find out the same with these trucks.

I am surprised that some of the upgrades on the 5th gen are actually cheaper. It’s allavout availabity and demand, I suppose.

It's only when you are REALLY into something you can see/justify/understand the value and cost where others might be completely mind boggled in why someone would spend so much when something else much cheaper "does the job"...

Understanding that, at least for me, allows me to appreciate other peoples decision to spend insane amounts of cash on things I could care less about.

While I might not spend that type of coin on a bike, I have on many other things...

If I told you guys how much I spend on some of the other things important to me, I would probably get some cringe worthy responses too. My 4Runner is one of my more "affordable" hobbies.

Amen! I have a fancy carbon mountain bike too... and a high-end stereo... and on and on and on. LOL

People who are passionate about stuff spend money on it and there's nothing wrong with any of it!

I love my Gobi Stealth rack on my 5th Gen. I have a friend who purchased a used Gobi Stealth Rack for $1400 and it was on the vehicle of the seller for two years and still in great condition. THEY DEFINITELY HOLD THEIR VALUE!

Resale value can be something to consider, assuming you intend of doing the work when you are done with the car or accessory… That said, it still helps to get it at the right price.

In my own endeavors, I found buying quality has never really come back to bite me when it came to selling… it’s the budget / bottom dollar stuff where I took the bigger hit.
