To Regear?, or Not to Regear?

I came from 225/75/15 size tires and I'm on 31x10.5R15 tires now, It is a little sluggish, but not as bad as when I was at 33x10.5R15. My question is should I regear to get back to spec because I would like the power back, and if so what gears would be enough? 4.30? 4.56? 4.88? More or less how much would it cost? It's not too bad now but I'm saving up because I really want to do it. Any insight is greatly aprreciated!

That depends on if you want to go to 33 or 35 in the future,
I kinda feel like 33 is the perfect size tire for all around looks and performance (wheeling)

if so, move to 4.88 and go to 33s in the future.

if you plan to go to 35 definitely go 5.29, everyone at 4.88 that went to 35s wish they had done the 5.29s.

If you plan on staying at 31 then I dont see the reason for spending the money to regear.

Do you have a ball park figure of how much it would cost to regear? to 4.88's? And also if I had my 31's on 4.88 would that be bad? Because it would take me awhile to get money to buy 33's.

its not gonna be bad... Im running 33s on 5.29 which everyone said would be crazy. I like it. my rpms are a little high at 3400 at 70mph, but I dont daily drive my 4runner anymore either. If I was driving hwy for an hour a day I wouldnt have done it.

There is an estimator online to tell you what to expect with certain tire size, gears and such depending on the transmission... I got to find the link.

I think you would be fine regearing to 4.88 on 31s til you moved to 33's. The change would be less than I had.

As far as cost, it kinda depends. You plan on pulling the diffs yourself? you have someone that can set gears for cheap?

Do it the easy way and order a full diff from ECGS all set up the way you want it.

When I have the money I might just end up taking it to a shop here on the west coast, hopefully it doesn't run more than 1 grand else I might look into getting a super charger instead. But thanks for all the info now I have something in mind to work with.

A regear won't be that bad for you since you only have a rear diff. You could definitely find someone in SoCal to regear your one diff rather than going through an out of state source. I'd say $6-700 tops unless of course you go with a locker as well (might be advisable since you're 2wd).

oh, lol, yeah, maybe I should pay attention to that LOL,

with only a rear diff, its way cheaper. the front diff is more expensive to do.

Few more questions would I gain more power? Going to 4.88's? I would like it to get close enough to stock and try not to lose my gas mileage, I just have to find a shop near me that can regear for me.

I stumbled upon this site and I think this helped with where I should be if I don't go 4.88s? either 4.10 or 4.30? I'm at 3.70 running 31's lol.

You might want to put new bearings in there while you have the diff apart. At least the pinion bearing. My diff rebuild cost $600 in labor. I droped off the whole car for a couple days. I found a trans shop that did diff work. Took them two try to get it right though. Finding a good diff shop is very important (rather than someone who says they can rebuild a diff). Make sure they have done Toyota diff work before.
