Today: New wheels and Tires! (Pirelli Scorpion All Terrain Plus)

Hi all,

Last year I bought a (2019) TRD ORP and my intention has been to essentially turn it into a TRD Pro without paying the Pro premium.

Today my wheels came in so I went down to Discount Tire to have my stock wheels/Blizzaks switched out for the new summer set up.

I went with the relatively new Pirelli Scorpion All Terrain Plus tires in stock size and these tires are mostly what I wanted to post about since I haven't seen many people on this forum using them. I wanted a street biased AT tire that looks good, behaves well on the pavement and that would do fine for some very mild off roading. I don't go mudding or rock crawling, just a little running around the UT desert and dirt roads/fire roads for camping.

This is pretty much how Pirelli marketed this tire so I hope it will be a good fit, designed for a similar market segment as Nitto Terra Grappler. I don't want to start an internet pissing contest but frankly I just have more faith in Pirelli as a tire company than Nitto. I'm hoping the Scorpions have better wet handling than the reports I've heard about the Terra Grapplers. Time will tell, hopefully I'm right, maybe I screwed up - we'll see.

In the first 50 miles of mixed city and highway driving up to 75 mph I can tell you two things:

1. They balanced well - the ride is smooth, no wobble, shimmy etc.
2. They aren't a loud tire. Obviously this can change over time but right now they are no louder than the Blizzaks I had on over winter or the Bridgestones that came from the dealer.

Obviously I haven't had the chance to use them in varied conditions or put many miles on them so the jury is still out but so far I don't have any complaints. I'll try to update this as the miles increase but that will happen slowly, it's a second vehicle for me and my accord gets most of the commuting miles.

Good luck, never bought a pair of Pirelli's but I've never heard anything good about them. Perhaps since these are made for off-road they will be better. Nitto's are made by Toyo. I hear good things and bad things about them. There is always a fan and someone that doesn't like just about any tire. Let us know how they do after 10k. P rated? I am surprised you didn't get talked into the P rated Wildpeaks. Lot of good things said about them on here.

Went with the same ones! I love them. I’ve had many sets of pirellis that have all been great.

I hope they work out for you better than they worked for me on my Mustangs. The PZero Nero and PZero were the OEM tires on my 06 and 17 Mustangs, and were my least favorite of all the tires I had on them. Granted, it's a different application, so maybe they'll be ok for what you need them for.

Honestly, it's often hard to tell how a tire is going to preform by brand alone. All brands have some simply awful tires, but most have amazing tires, too. It's generally best to go by the reviews. And a lot of times, tires offered as original equipment on vehicles will be manufactured to lower standards to meet price or mpg requirements. Which explains the Duehlers (sp?) the 4runners are coming with.

I agreeMost tire manufacturers make same compounds over different brand names
some tires react better/worse to temperature :uzi:
Buy the tire that fits your needs unless you own a Bugatti veyron

We just put Pirelli Scorpions on my wife's 2017 RX350. They seem to be doing real well for her. I don't drive it much myself so I can't give too much of an opinion.

At the risk of starting the pissing contest you mentioned, I have the Terra Grapplers on my 2019 ORP and have found them to be very competent in rain. We were on a road trip in January in West Texas and were driving 70 miles an hour in heavy rain for hours with no hydroplaning or otherwise feeling not secure on the road. I'm a pretty conservative driver so I slow down for tight curves and that sort of thing. Anyway YMMV.

2020 TRD Off Pirelli Scorpion All Terrain Plus tires

I was thing exactly putting on the same thing on my brand new TRD Off Road Supper White, OEM wheels. It was between exactly two tire option's Pirelli Scorpion All Terrain Plus tires and Bridgestone Dueler A/T Revo 3 both tire on sale at Costco. Or at least the Cooper tires Discoverer AT3 4S or XLT. That's what I narrowed the tire for me. Regards Sal

Pirelli scorpion AT plus

I just performed first rotation (with cross). I first liked these tires in the rack at Sams club. The tire bead and sidewall were thicker than other tires also in rack, simply measured by hand with thumb on outside and fingers inside tire. Mine are P-metric 115T and are rated XL load, in stock size for my 2017 SR5. Compared to both my prior factory Bridgestone and Dunlop All Season tires I think noise is about the same. These feel much more"sure footed" on freeways, highways and in town. My use in dirt is limited to some short drives any tire can do, so I have yet to test traction in trail conditions, or snow. Weight is 1 lb more and gas mileage seems same as factory stock tires.
Very smooth at 85 mph and quiet. I air down on dirt and Pavement I use 32psi cold. I believe they are made in Brazil.

Hopefully the Scorpions solved their flat spotting they were notoriously for. Apparently they would do it even parked out overnight, then would slowly pop back out while driving for awhile, the vibrations and slop non withstanding.
