Tried searching the thread but it keeps saying can only search once every 15 sends or something crazy like that....

Anyhow a game of good idea, bad idea.

Moving from Cali to Arkansas. Need to tow a 77 Bronco, lifted (33's), hard top. Anyone towed something that heavy for that far?? Driving a 2004, V8 AWD. standard hitch. I have towed a lot locally but never this far. Curious. Option B would be to have it shipped.:confused:

thats a long drive with a heavy load. for short distances, id say its totally fine, and you probably already know that, but the main stress of that drive is going to be on you, and your transmission. I'm not saying get it shipped, but if you do decide to tow it cross country, invest in a trans temp gauge, and be very careful.
 
A vehicle like that + trailer able to haul that kind of weight will be pushing the limits of the 4Runner. Around town would be one thing, but cross country is a whole other story.
 
Trans temp gauge and a big ole Trans cooler. Does your trailer have brakes and sway control? What's the total weight of your bronco and trailer combined? Need a little more info to give you a more educated guess.
 
How heavy is your bronco? How heavy is the trailer? The engine and transmission should be able to handle it fine. This is the same combo that once came in the tundra. You will have to drive cautiously and slow because handling may be a bit squirly Pay close attention how you balance the bronco on the trailer and how it affects tongue weight and how much the front of the 4runner lifts up. You may have to invest in a weight distributing hitch setup. At the least, I would say, you will have to install a electric brake controller.
 
You may want to invest in some side mirror extenders to make it easier to see what is directly behind you even thought the old Bronco is not as wide as some vehicles.
 
so I've done a little research so i can try to help a bit better.

i went on the FSB (full size bronco) forum and found that many guys running broncos on 33's were seeing weights ranging from 5300 to 5700 lbs, dependent on what else they've done, some had bumpers and winches, others just mostly stock rigs.

the towing capacity of your 4runner is 7000lbs approximately. now factor in the weight of the trailer, and you are seriously pushing the limits. my 18' big tex steel car hauler with wood deck is almost exactly 2000lbs.

Now this is doable, absolutely, but do you want to? i have had a car on my car hauler one time, it was a vw beetle convertible and it took some concentration, not to mention it wasn't nearly as heavy as a bronco.

it can be done, but i don't really know that it should. counting in the vehicle, trailer, people, and gear weight, and you might be over the gvwr, which can be very dangerous.
 
I'd check and see what it costs to have it shipped before I even considered towing it. About 7 years ago I paid approx $1300 to ship my Wrangler from Utah to Buffalo NY and it worked out perfectly. I'm sure it costs a little more now but back then for $1300 I didn't have to pull it, worry about it or deal with it. Worth every penny.

NO sway control, yes brakes. Bronco is about 4600, trailer another 1000 approx. I know its getting to the top end.

Thanks a lot. I got the same feeling but I guess was hoping for a different answer than what I already know. I guess I'll be setting up shipping.

Well you got an answer. I would agree and say, that's too much weight. I've towed a 7600 lb travel trailer about 11 miles on the highway with my v6. I wouldn't want to go any further than that. Even with the extra power of the v8, its just not a long enough wheel base for serious towing.

glad i could help out, my goal wasn't to shoot down the vehicle or your skills, its just a matter of safety for you and those around you on the road
