If you are interested in learning how a pro does a regear / rebuild of one of our 8" rear diffs, this is your opportunity to learn the process.

We flew out from California to North Carolina to film this video and a video of installing an Eaton locker in my front 7.5" clamshell diff.

Darn, I was telling myself to do this,,, but then I realized this is going to be a lot of work and time away from things. So I ended up ordering build front and rear. 4.88's! Hopefully in the future I will install myself.

That's a very informative video. I understand the rear diffs alot better now.

I did a trick in my one warn 3rd member to quiet it down. As is ring and Pinon have some wear and it was noisy. I put 100% locus heavy duty oil stabilizer in it and ran it for almost 70k miles that way. It really quieted the noise down and worked fine all that time.

You can see the wear on the Pinon gear especially and naturally the ring gear as well.

I can post pictures of the gears, if folks want me too. I just have it currently sitting in my spare parts pile.

I swapped in a different axke housing and 3rd member that is in good shape in the rig now.

I don't need you guys to kiss my butt, but geez, I thought there would be more of a reaction than this. It's reactions like this, or maybe more accurately the lack of reaction that makes me question if I should keep posting our videos on this platform.

I haven't posted this video on any Toyota Enthusiast Facebook pages yet, but I know when I do, the response is going to be a lot different. People are going to be stoked to have this gift of tech from probably the biggest differential and axle company in the industry.

Anyway, I'll step off my soapbox now.

I have zero interest in rebuilding my own differentials. I know how to do it. I have to tools to do it, and I've done it a couple times. But I would much rather pay the extra money for someone else to do it that has a lot more experience doing it and there be a warranty on it. I appreciate your videos for a visual representation of the service procedures and recommend them to other people wanting to do certain repairs, but I don't feel the need to watch every video you make.

I'll step on your soapbox for a minute. If you aren't getting the reaction you like then maybe that speaks more to the people here and their mindset and less about your channel. Why would anyone watch this video if it doesn't apply to their interests? Maybe this particular video didn't get the reaction you wanted here because it wasn't relevant to the general audience here. You probably will get a much more gratifying reaction for your ego by posting on facebook pages mostly because of the larger audience there.

It's a sign of the times. More people are moving to social media platforms. But, there are still lots of DIY guys on this forum and you don't have to have a current need to do a diff regear to find this subject matter compelling and informative.

Yes, I will post this video on dozens of Facebook pages soon and get the ego stroking as you inferred. Maybe you and others don't know, but we're not getting rich from our YouTube channel. I do this first and foremost to help people. My favorite form of payment is hearing back from people that have been helped from our videos. And, only a very small percentage of people actually take the time to comment. But, that small percentage gives us the affirmation that what we are doing is worthwhile.

The response to our videos on this platform use to be a lot more positive. You help out a lot on this forum and I know it's not just a purely unselfish occupation. People like us get some personal satisfaction from it knowing we've helped people. That's human and natural. So Dude, you're stroking your ego too, even if you're possibly reluctant to admit it.

When I pump it out to around 40 Toyota Enthusiast Facebook pages, it's going to get a lot more interest. Anyone with a Toyota that has lifted their rig and has gotten bigger tires is a potential candidate for a regear. There is a massive amount of lifted Toyotas on the roads and there always will be. I think this video will gain in popularity as time goes on and people find it.

When you help a friend, family member or total stranger, you know that you helped. With that being said, Engine rebuilds, Transmission rebuilds and diff rebuilds are way above most diy mechanics so only some of the members will be interested in those types of videos.


I would agree the both of you are correct in some of your points.

Well all know that Tim and crew put a lot of times into your videos. Nobody is not disagreeing on this.

We all know that Bad luck likes to keep information accurate and just help people fix their rigs.

Both of these things are great contributions to the forum in general.


PhattyDucks input that the video its going to take some time for folks to have time to watch it is very valid.

Lots of people will appreciate this video. It was very thoughtful of the CEO to let you even video this procedure.

I honestly, may only rebuild one diff just to have said I done one.

Other then that, I am sending my diffs ECGS and I will be buying my parts off of them for this. As this is a great American company and they do excellent work.

You make a valid point Charlie that my videos are long and take time to watch, but I'm still spot on with my assessment of what this forum has become. It has changed quite a bit since I joined. Lots of people who use to contribute have dropped off completely or barely visit anymore. It's weird and disappointing that I can post a video like this and it barely gets acknowledged. I partnered with probably the biggest and best Differential and Axle builder in industry to bring awesome videos to the DIY Toyota Automotive Mechanic Community and I get this dismal response. If I posted this video in 2015 when I first became a member, it would have gotten tons of commentary, regardless if people had time to watch the whole thing. The simple fact we got invited to film at ECGS is enough of a reason to comment and acknowledge what we pulled off.

But, it is what it is. I'll still contribute here and there on this forum and others, but my days of starting new threads for the videos I've made are done. This pathetic response sealed it for me. I'll continue to add new videos to my sticky video thread so people can search there for any new content we make.

Toyota 8&quot; Rear Differential ReGear / Rebuild

I’m with Phatty duck Tim. Timeless is a great way to say it. I just now got around to start watching the rear diff video this morning. Camp trips, wheeling, 3 Kids in Soccer, dance, karate, and my both my wife and I work have makes august and September super chaotic for us. Fact I had to start watching on the cardio machine this morning.

I really miss the glory days of the forums too. The late 90’s up until the Great Recession was a glorious time for all hobbies and interests on web forums. I used to be really salty about the state of pretty much all forms these days. I have since gone over it, and I’m now just glad that I got to experience the good ol’ days.

Social media like Facebook definitely reaches more people, it’s too bad there hasn’t been a good way to improve the signal to noise ratio, but it’s what it is I guess.

The diff videos are super relevant for me as I’m going to take the plunge of 34-35” tires and a regear this winter. When that rear diff video popped up in my feed the other day I even told my older son, I think Tim the toolman must’ve been reading our minds.

Unlike most people I took the time and watched the whole video. Even though i've already rebuilt/re geared my own diff. This video still intrigues me a ton seeing the process done by a true professional so I have to really appreciate the effort and time making this video. So A+ job by Timmy!

I think this forum at least the 3rd gen section is dying slowly. Perhaps because these vehicles are all over 20 years old and what not... and of course socials
