Toyota ABS Sensor Guards

As he stated in his recent post, the ABS Sensors are vulnerable.
Even on the road they can become vulnerable to damage and even more so when wheeling.
I thought I would post several links to options.

I just saw these on a customer's Tacoma a few weeks back... I honestly like how well made they are (kudos to the chef, very nicely made).

But I also feel like they are a solution looking for a problem? I can't honestly recall a single instance where an ABS sensor itself was damaged driving on-road or off-roading on a Toyota Truck/SUV. Sure I've seen tons of stretched, chewed, and cut wires; and I have seen some seriously impressive damage to the wheel hubs/spindles/suspension.

But I haven't seen just the sensor get broken off, it's in such a tucked up spot that if you ran into a rock jutting out or a branch and it happened to hit just the right spot of the spindle to break a sensor, you're likely going to have bigger issues than just a broken ABS sensor (i.e. torn-up CV boot, broken/bent spindle, damaged brake lines, etc.)

That being said, if you have an extra $100, it won't hurt anything to throw them off for peace of mind. Hell they look nice enough I'd do it just for the off-road blind.
 
I bought a set of the SDHQs shortly after I got my 4Runner. I live down a gravel road and frequently hit up forest service roads, so it was a no brainer for cheap insurance. They were fairly easy to install without removing the tires.

After they got here, I did paint prep and painted them with 5-7 coats of black paint... which surprisingly has held up well over the past 2 years, besides a few knicks here and there.
 
Tip on bare aluminum SDHQ's: don't use supplied bolts because they will get galvanic corrosion within short time. Get same kind of bolts that are Stainless from any local hardware store. Don't ask how I know this.
 
That's why I coated mine with antiseize before installation... as you should with any dissimilar metals. [emoji6]

No one is forcing anyone to purchase these.
Just like no one forces anyone to replace the stamped metal “skids” with heavier protection, Shock Guards, Rock Sliders, LCA Skid Plate, Lower Link Skid Plate … etc!
This is a personal preference just like any mod.

But thanks for your input, it’s always valued.
 
Coming from the Jeep world where there are 14 manufacturers for every non existent problem, its interesting to see the limited bling for these rigs. No one but you will know they are there. Oh, except your tire guy and mechanic. This to me makes sense in certain situations, but in reality, its bling for the majority of folks IMO. But hey, you bought the rig. Do your thing.

ABS Sensor Technology

The valve system controls the volume of brake fluid in the brake lines. When the speed sensor detects that a wheel has locked, the hydraulic valve automatically releases brake fluid pressure, thereby releasing the braking pressure. When rotation of the wheel is detected, the pump engages to create pressure and the braking system reapplies the brakes. The Electronic Control Unit (ECU) controls the valves and continually monitors the speed sensor of each wheel. This enables the ECU to evaluate had to do it needs to not override manual braking.
 
My guards arrived today.
