Toyota has claimed the title of World's Fastest SUV after a Toyota Land Cruiser hit 230 miles an hour on a long runway. But don't try that with the Land Cruiser you might have parked in the driveway.

Toyota (TM) made a few changes to create the vehicle it's cleverly dubbed the Land Speed Cruiser. While the engine started out as the Land Cruiser's usual 381 horsepower 5.7-liter V8, engineers modified it by adding two big turbochargers, among other changes. Ultimately, the engine's output was multiplied more than five times to 2,000 horsepower.

The hulking SUV required other tweaks to prepare it to push through the air at over 200 miles an hour. The suspension was lowered so that the truck hugged the ground, and was also modified to allow for wider tires.

Former NASCAR driver Carl Edwards drove the truck at Mojave Air and Space Port in California for the record run. That facility has a 2.5 mile runway on which the test was done.

See, this is why I couldn't be an engineer. I'm not sure the max speed of a standard 381 HP LC (without the speed limiter), but I'm assuming it's at least the 160mph listed on the gauge cluster.

So just to get it to 230mph they had to quintuple the horsepower to over 2000?
Suspension altering aside, that makes absolutely no sense.

Maybe i am not getting your sarcasm, but you know that the average Land Cruiser (without limiter) has NO CHANCE of getting to 160 mph, right? I will be surprise if it gets past 130 mph!! (You cannot look on gauge cluster and determine top speed of a vehicle.)

I'm being a bit sarcastic, yeah. I know that you can't always use the gauge cluster to see the top speed of a vehicle but it is usually in the basic range. I don't know, I would think that a brand new Land Cruiser could get past 130 without the speed limiter. Maybe I was dreaming, but I could have sworn I've seen a few posts around here with 3rd gen 4Runners getting up to around 108. That is 108 on a 200k mile 14 year old+ 183 horsepower V6 engine.
I know the new Land Cruisers weigh a little bit more, less aerodynamic, etc but I would be very surprised if they could not make it past 130 without the speed limiter with a V8 engine that is, for all intents and purposes, literally over twice as strong as the 4runner's.

If the primary limiter is air resistance (which between 160 and 230 mph it is), then power required goes up as the cube of the speed. So, doubling the speed takes 8 times the horsepower. Going from 160 to 230 (a speed ratio of about 1.4) would require about 3x the horsepower.

So, working backwards, if 2000Hp will get you 230mph, 381Hp should top out at about 130 mph. Sounds about right.
