Toyota... You need to step up or ship out. A recent dyno testing of an 08 Forester XT.

And I was so interested in getting either a 4Runner or an FJ too...

EDIT: This is with an intake and a tune and a turbocharged 2.5l flat-4.

EDIT 2: I take that back... I'd still get an FJ (it's cool looking)... but honestly, they really should push the output.

Remind me, how is a turbo engine of benefit off-road?? I assume that you do know what off-roading is, right?? So, tell me, professor, which vehicle is better off-road??

Here is a simple question...off pavement, WHICH VEHICLE CAN PUT MORE POWER TO THE GROUND?? Subi vs. 4runner/FJ. YOU NEED TO STEP UP HERE.

How much can the Subi tow????

Maybe the Subi should worry more about it's competitors, e.g. Evos, RAV4, etc. before worrying about the big boys. :D

Since you're a Subi fan, maybe you guys should worry more about QUALITY and RELIABILITY, rather than go to a big boy forum and try to talk trash (and looking like an idiot!): watch out, Kia is ahead of you guys!! :D

Get an FJ and put the supercharger on it, that'll torque for ya:D

I am surprised at how rich that Subi dyno sheet is... It's been a long ime since I have done any of that but those A/F ratios seem rich for a stock ULEV motor. Am I wrong?

Thai, :iagree: Correct me if I am wrong, most off-roading occurs in low-range, no shortage of torque then! :D :lmao: In a Subi you'd be dealing with a turbo and no low-range, not so good off-road.

Perhaps the Subi would have the upper hand in high speed desert racing. If Linfone is from NJ I don't think there's a lot of desert racing going on there.:D Oh well.

Yeah, when the 4runner or any 4x4 with TC shifts into 4-LO, there is not a single Subi that can match it torque-wise.

Subaru has changed it's front face how many times now?? Those wonderful designers just can't decide on a corporate look!:p Subaru is even worst than Acura in this area! :(

IMHO, those Subarus are either girly-looking or just downright coffee-can ricemobile. (And yes, i even think that as an Asian!) Well, edit that, i think that the new Subis are more girly than rice nowadays.

I wouldn't put too much in initial quality. I like what the vehicle does in 5 or 10 years. Something Toyota shines in. I tried to look for something Consumer Reports has about reliability. I couldn't find it on-line, but I did find their recommendations.

http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/cars/types/new-a-to-z-index.htm

Every Subaru is recommended. Some are even in their second-tier recommendation. Also, the 4Runner is in the second-tier recommendation.

I am just not too sure about JD Powers, I guess they do OK. In my opinion, Kia is not ahead of Subaru. I guess, there are different reports to point who is the best.

Well, as I mentioned in my other post to Linfone in the general discussion, I just came from his high-horsepower Subie and one of the prime reasons I left it was because of reliability. Yes, if you buy an Outback it will last forever. But, if you buy a turbo rally car, it

Now that I look at the Consumer Reports recommendations, Subaru is the only company 100% recommended by Consumer Reports. Am I reading that wrong???

That's what I see, every Subi is a 1st or 2nd tier recommendation. IMHO, when it comes to car Consumer reports needs to be taken with a grain of salt. Cheap, nothing problems can affect recommendations as much as significant problems. They also don't factor repair costs quite right somehow. IMHO Edmunds does a better job in some ways. Consumer reprts, to me, is only one small piece of the pie, same as JDPowers. I think you need to look at all three and then type "______ sucks" into Google. Hell, Consumer Reports has the 7-Series BMW as a recommended buy:confused: :wtf:

come on how can you compare a subie to a 4runner. Most of the subies are a smaller class than the 4runner and are all wheel drive. I personally would rather take the 4runners 4WD system any day over a suburu all wheel drive.

See that's the thing. When you're going off road (not gravel or dirt road either!) you're looking for something with overall capability. I don't think 500 lb/ft of torque in ANY vehicle at a place like Hollister would just be pretty much a waste, but unnecessary for all intensive purposes. I'd rather be able to make through a muddy, almost flooded, debris ridden, almost impassible road during a storm... than blow away in 4 inches of water!

0-60 time? Oh wait it's raining... better hide inside.

Actually I understand all this... I just don't understand why Toyota is like so random with the numbers... Please read my latest post in the 4th gen forum.

Numbers are one thing, but the important factor is how well the power is put to the ground. It doesn't matter if it's got a 500hp/500ft-lb engine under the hood and all that power is robbed by an inefficient transmission.

So far the only "bulletproof engine" I've heard about is an EJ22T....

2JZ-GTE, by bolt-on mods only, easily handles 500-600hp on stock internals. Plenty of 2JZ's have pasted the 1000hp mark.

The UZ family. There are a good amount in the 500k mile club without a rebuild.

I can't believe anyone would post a J.D. Power, the same service that puts Buick on the same level as Lexus.

But honestly, I like Subaru's AWD, Toyota's N/A engines, Subaru's turbos, and Toyota's truck platforms.

BTW, there seem to be some sort of issues with my cousin's 4Runner's brakes (2005). Is this normal? Good reason to put on some big brakes :D

EDIT: Most Subie drivers are idiots. They tune their cars to 600 hp/tq. I think there's like 5% of true Subie people. Like my friend, who's got upgrades (brakes [Brembo], rear strut bar, front and rear sways) on a n/a Impreza to do rallies... in the snow.

EDIT 2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tQGx28B1p6M

EDIT 3: I think everyone's had a really bad issue with different cars. My 4Runner died at 60k that's about 5k a year from a blown engine. Up until that point it ran very well... My Subaru is a 2008 has little vibrations from the trunk, probably a seat clip or something.

4th gen T4R brakes come in two sizes depending trim. I think the Sport w/Xreas and the Limiteds all get the bigger brakes. All 4th gen T4R brakes seem to be good in terms of function/power. The earlier 4th gens seem to be subject to sticky, corroded calipers when used in a corrosive envir... I am pretty sure I read there's a design change beginning in '06 to address the issue. I love big brake upgrades but in the case of the T4R most don't seem to bother. I am still on stock tires and probably wouldn't go beyond a 275/70/17. With stock tires the brakes are great in my '07. When I say great I mean in a comprehensive fashion; power, pedal effort and feel.

If the '05 you mentioned got new calipers with current production units that should be the end of the trouble.

Some idiot at the dealer told my aunt that "this was normal for a 4Runner" and they never did this. BTW, it is an SR5...

If you know this, then why are we even talking about a truck engine vs. a freaking car turbo engine??? Maybe, you need to step up and learn about different engine designs before criticizing.
