Maybe today's new oils (synthetics) have eliminated the additional wear and tear in high compression ratio engines. But, in my opinion, squeezing out the max HP of an engine seems like buying trouble. It's like buying a stereo that max's out at 100watts, or buying one that has the ability to max out at 500watts, but only needs 100watts to be perfect. I don't know what the compression ratios are for Toyota engines, but I'd assume they're not quite as high as those for Nissan and soforth.
My dad has a 1985 MB 500 SEL. That 5.0 V8 has a compression ratio of 1:1. There is a reason why those engines go for 500k+ miles in the worst of worst conditions. Plus, no premium fuel required or recommended. Infact, 87 octane is practically a premium fuel for that engine to begin with. However, in contrast, the old Lotus sports cars were just turbo charged 4 bangers...and they were notorious for being huge POS mobiles, always broken.
