I prefer old reliable which is why I went for a 2019 with a key. But this chip shortage is going to put them back a few years.

Great!! Except for provisional. Never liked the smart key over a real key. And I know the real keys has electronics. My 2001 has the old dumb key. Cost three bucks to cut a new one.

Hide the courtesy key in your car somewhere. Have a locksmith cut a door key on a blank without the immobilizer tag, just a plain brass key. Put that in your wallet so you can open the door to get the spare.

If you lose it, there's no make of car on the key, no remote unlock to use to find your car and without the immobilizer tag it won't start the car.

You are not exaggerating. Wife bought a new car couple weeks ago and the hockey puck thing is almost as big as a flip phone I had in the 90s. I mean what? is this a TV remote too? How do you put this in your pocket and comfortably sit? Makes my pants sag a little. (ok, I'm joking about sagging pants.) Why I like my 4Runner vs an old Grand Cherokee I had with push button start. Toyota has a real key.

Good to hear. I’ve driven a few cars/trucks with the PTS system and maybe I’m old school or whatever but I prefer a real key. It’s like the self drive technology, I don’t want any part of it. I like the entire experience of driving.

"Old school" rules.
I have to use the key to lock the doors on my pickup. Can't just push the lock and close the door to lock it.
Impossible to lock myself out. No batteries, no needing the dealer to code it.

My experience on that type of lock is if you manually push the lock down to lock it, & hold the handle up (open position) while closing the door, you can lock the door without needing the key.

I now prefer no key (I keep the fob in my pocket and it has a hidden key) and just a push button. Funny thing is that my father had a Coronation year Sunbeam Talbot (1953 maybe) and it had a push button start!! Oh, and a manual sunroof! That car was something. Good old days!

I usually drive the other vehicles (wife drives the 4R) and I always reach for a start button. I don't mind it but it is a bit more convenient in the winter to not reach for a key to unlock and start with gloves on. The chip-shortage situation should be a lot better after Q1, I am hearing. The two deal-breaker conveniences I look for now are ventilated/cooled front seats and heated steering wheels.

My son did that on his jeep to confuse thieves. He has to press a button before the key will start the Jeep.

Still have that on my 1962 MGA. Except it's a pull button not push. Turn key to on and pull the starter knob.

I had a 1952 Buick Special, you turned on the key switch, and it had a little round pedal on the floor under the gas pedal, you push the gas pedal to the floor to engage the starter.
